Paperback. Zustand: Good. A facsimile of the GALA Committee's mock auction catalog for an artistic intervention into the props and plots of Melrose PlaceOriginally published in a limited run in 1998, Primetime Contemporary Art documented In the Name of the Place, a radical two-year intervention by a group of artists, initiated by Mel Chin and known as the GALA Committee, on the primetime television show Melrose Place. This extremely rare artist's book is reproduced for the first time as a facsimile edition. The artists comprising the GALA Committee worked with the producers of Melrose Place to develop a series of political works that were used as props and plot devices across two seasons of the show, providing surreptitious commentary on reproductive rights, HIV/AIDS, the Gulf War, domestic terrorism, corporate malfeasance and substance abuse. Some of these topics were banned by the FCC at the time, and the group's works allowed for the artists and the show to create political commentary that went unnoticed by censors. The artworks they produced were exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in 1997 and then sold at an auction at Sotheby's to support several charities. Primetime Contemporary Art was created by Mel Chin and Helen Nagge as a mock auction catalog documenting the artwork made for the show and the conceptual framework of the GALA Committee.…

An essential anthology of fiction, art and more from the experimental, punk-feminist 1980s downtown journal, with work by Kathy Acker, Constance DeJong, Cookie Mueller and morePublished between 1978 and 1991, Top Stories was a prose periodical specializing in experimental writing with a collaborative, punk-feminist ethos, edited by New York-based photographer Anne Turyn (born 1954). Paperback. Zustand: Good. Ren e Green's long-unavailable homage to (and parody of) the historically male-dominated genre of the road novelOriginally published in 1994, Camino Road is the debut novel of acclaimed New York-based artist and writer Ren e Green (born 1959). Set between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and combining the genres of road novel, countercultural memoir, travel journal, epistolary novel and screenplay, it is the record of the mind of a young woman coming of age as an artist, traveling in Mexico and exploring the bohemian milieu of 1980s New York. Serving as both homage to and parody of the historically male-dominated genre of the road novel, Camino Road interrogates the tropes of the form through the unusual perspective of a young woman. The relationship of language to self-formation is demonstrated by the protagonist Lyn's attempts to learn Spanish. Accordingly, the book is divided into an English half and a Spanish half. Published as an artist's book for the Reina Sof a group exhibition The Raw and the Uncooked, the book includes an appendix with photographs and ephemera from Madrid's 1980s movida punk movement.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. "People used to tell me, if you keep on writing maybe you'll make a name for yourself," New York-based artist and writer Constance DeJong (born 1950) wrote in Modern Love. "They were right: My name's Constance DeJong. My name's Fifi Corday. My name's Lady Mirabelle, Monsieur Le Prince, and Roderigo. Roderigo's my favorite name. First I had my father's name, then my husband's, then another's. I don't know. I don't want to know the cause of anything." Modern Love, DeJong's first book, was published in 1977 by Standard Editions, an imprint co-founded by DeJong and Dorothea Tanning. In 1978, the text was adapted into a 60-minute radio program accompanied by the "Modern Love Waltz," a piano composition by Philip Glass. In this new edition, DeJong's debut novel is brought back into print, her dissonant shifts of voice and inimitable staccato rhythm made available to a new generation of readers. …
