The following are summaries of some of the essays or features. "The Story of St. Vedalia": about Vedalia Cardinalis, the Australian ladybug, rescuing American crops from Icerya purchasi, the cottony cushion scale. "History of the Catholic Church": about the Catholic Church in LA and a brief history of some of the local missions. "From St. Louis to San Francisco": J. E. Clark recounts the arduous experience he had as one of 1,000 contractors hired by Aspinwall & Co. to work on the Panama Railroad from c. 1850-1851. He describes the horrendous working conditions such as the unbearable climate, lack of provisions and amenities, and deadly parasitic insects and diseases. He estimates that nine-tenths of the 1,000 contractors died on the Isthmus of Panama. He describes how Aspinwall did not give enough nutritious food or gave food that was spoiled. "Exceptional Years": about California floods and droughts with emphasis on LA. Guinn says the earliest record of a flood in LA was in 1811. He proceeds to describes several cycles of floods and droughts in LA. He says that the floods, while destructive (he describes the flooding of Sacramento and gold miners' dams), helped usher in periods of agricultural prosperity. Conversely, he says the droughts wreaked havoc on cattle (he says thousands died of starvation in at least one drought) and brought an end to Southern California's cattle- and sheep-raising industries. "Twin Relics of Barbarism": autobiographical account of California delegate and abolitionist John A. Wills who drew up resolutions at the 1856 Republican Convention which stated the Republican Party's platform against the "twin relics of barbarism," polygamy and slavery. He describes his interactions with noted Congressmen such as Joshua R. Giddings and Francis P. Blair (Giddings wanted to change Wills's wording but Blair advocated on Wills's behalf to keep the original phrasing). Wills also describes other political events following the nomination of John C. Fremont as the Republican presidential candidate. "Report of the Committee on Meteorology": about the latest discoveries in meteorology such as the recent generally accepted theory that "violent storms" are "cyclonic areas" centered around an axis of low pressure. The concluding series of reports (such as the Secretary's and Treasurer's Reports) are very brief and less than one page.…
