Darin unterscheidet sich diese Buchreihe von einer rein technologischen Darstellung. Die Aufgabe, dieser retrospektiven Sinneshaltung am Beispiel des Gegenstandes Holz Raum zu geben, hat mich seit je ermutigt, mein Schaffen auf dieses eine Objekt zu richten im Bestreben, in der Synthese von erarbeiteten Einzelwertungen zu einem allgemeineren und weitergreifenden Erkenntnisgut zu gelangen. Diese Einsicht hilft mir auch, die Verantwortung zu tragen, die sich beim Schreiben unabwendbar einstellt. Die «Holzkunde» wendet sich in erster Linie an die Fachleute in der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft; sie ist Grundlage für die Vorlesungen in Holzkunde und Holz technologie, wie sie im forstwirtschaftlichen Studium an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule in Zürich vermittelt werden. Den Anstoss zur schrift lichen Fixierung haben die Studierenden der Abteilung für Forstwirtschaft ge geben; die «Holzkunde» möge auch ihnen einen Dienst erweisen. Die Mit-Teilungen der drei Bände wollen im Sinne Werner WEBERS (1972) auf genommen werden als «Teilen der Weg-Erfahrungen» und Ansatzstellen für neue Gespräche sein.

There were two workshops, October 14-25 and November 18-29, with more than 60 participants giving 70 talks. The titles of all talks are given at the end of this volume. Here we included 22 papers prepared by the authors especially for this volume, while the material of the other talks are published elsewhere. The semester was sponsored by the Soviet Academy of Sciences and UN ESCO. Since the new building of the Euler Institute was not ready at that moment, the sessions were held in the old building of the Steklov Mathemati cal Institute in the very center of St. Petersburg. Members of the staff of the Euler Institute were doing their best to organize properly the normal processing of the conference-not a simple task at that time because of the complications in the political and economical life in Russia just between the coup d'etat in August and the dismantling of the Soviet Union in December. The papers are mostly devoted to the theory of Toeplitz and model operators. These subjects are considered here from various points of view. Several papers concern the relationships of Toeplitz operators to weighted polynomial approximation. Namely, two papers by B. Solomyak and A. Volberg intensively treat the problem of spectra! multiplicity f~r analytic Toeplitz operators (which are, in fact, multiplication operators) and my paper can serve as an introduction to the problem. This theme of multiplicities is continued in a paper by V. Vasyunin where the multiplicity of the spectrum is computed for Hilbert space contractions with finite defect indices. V. Peller's paper deals with a perturbation theory problem for Toeplitz operators. In a paper by D. Yakubovich a new similarity model for a class of Toeplitz operators is constructed. S. Treil' presents a survey of a part of spectral function theory for vector valued function (Szego-Kolmogorov extreme prob!ems for operator weights, bases of vector rational functions, estimations of Hilbert transform with respect to operator weights, the operator corona problem). As a concluding remark I dare only note that the whole collection convinces us once more without a doubt of the fruitfullness of the natural union of operator theory and complex analysis (if at all the union of these fields is at all different from their intersection). 421 pp. Englisch.

In representation theory they appear as the images of the associated representations of the Lie algebras or of the enveloping algebras on the Garding domain and in quantum field theory they occur as the vector space of field operators or the \*-algebra generated by them. Some of the basic tools for the general theory were first introduced and used in these fields. For instance, the notion of the weak (bounded) commutant which plays a fundamental role in thegeneraltheory had already appeared in quantum field theory early in the six ties. Nevertheless, a systematic study of unbounded operator algebras began only at the beginning of the seventies. The organizing committee was composed of W.N. Everitt (Birm ingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec ( Coimbra) served cheerfully and efficiently as secretary of the meeting. The con ference was attended by 44 participants from 20 countries. Yet again the importance of inequalities in both pure and applied mathematics was made evident from the wide range of interests of the individual participants, and from the wealth of new results announced. New inequalities were presented in the usual spread of the subject areas now expected for these meetings: Classical and functional analysis, existence and boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations, with special contributions to computer science, quantum holography and error analysis. More strongly than ever, the role played by modern electronic computers was made clear in testing out and prohing into the validity and structure of certain inequalities. Here the computer acts not only for numerical calculations of great complexity, but also in symbolic manipulation of complex finite structures. Prob lems in inequalities which even a few years ago were intractable, now fall to solution or receive direct and positive guidance as a result of computer applications. The company was one of the first in the chemical industry to concentrate from the beginning on pharmaceuticals. Step by step new activi ties were taken up, but all within the frontiers of biology. During the 75 years of Roche the research division has become by far the largest department in the company, with basic research assuming an increasingly important part in it. It is therefore not surprising that research in bioelectrochemistry requires the use of a great many experimental methods. These methods are, however, mostly from the methodological arsenal of classical natural sciences so that a description of general principles of common methods of biology, chemistry, physics, and medicine is not presented in this volume. Thus, this volume does not attempt to give an exhaustive survey of techniques used in bioelectrochemical research. The principles of several techniques and methodologies are mainly reviewed from the viewpoint of their specific application in studies of electrochemical and interfacial phenomena in various biological systems involving simple low-molecular-mass molecules of biological significance, biomacro molecules and their conjugates (like for instance chromatine or mem branes), cells and living organisms. Mikhlin, in solving the regularization problem for two-dimensional singular integral operators [56], assigned to each such operator a func tion which he called a symbol, and showed that regularization is possible if the infimum of the modulus of the symbol is positive. Later, the notion of a symbol was extended to multidimensional singular integral operators (of arbitrary dimension) [57, 58, 21, 22]. Subsequently, the synthesis of singular integral, and differential operators [2, 8, 9]led to the theory of pseudodifferential operators [17, 35] (see also [35(1)-35(17)]\*), which are naturally characterized by their symbols. An important role in the construction of symbols for many classes of operators was played by Gelfand's theory of maximal ideals of Banach algebras [201. Using this the ory, criteria were obtained for Fredholmness of one-dimensional singular integral operators with continuous coefficients [34 (42)], Wiener-Hopf operators [37], and multidimensional singular integral operators [38 (2)]. At the Oberwolfach Conference more than forty scientists from around the world, in cluding applied mathematicians and electrical engineers from industry and universities, presented new results in this area of growing importance. The contributions to this conference are presented in these proceedings. They include contributions on special topics of current interest in circuit and device simulation, as well as contributions that present an overview of the field. In the semiconductor area special lectures were given on mixed finite element methods and iterative procedures for the solution of large linear systems. For three dimensional models new discretization procedures including software packages were presented. Con nections between semiconductor equations and the Boltzmann equation were shown as well as relations to the quantum transport equation. Other issues discussed in this area include the design of simulation programs for semiconductors, vectorcomputers, and interface problems in several dimensions. Topics discussed in the area of circuit simulation include the index classification of differential-algebraic systems, connections with ill-posed problems, and regularization techniques. Split discretization procedures were given for the efficient calculation of periodic solutions of circuits taking into acount the latency. Homotopy methods and new numerical techniques for differential-algebraic systems were presented, and im provements of special numerical methods for standard software packages were sug gested. Its devel opments usually are closely related to certain important problems in contemporary mathematics and physics. In the last 20 years, many new theories and interesting results have been discovered. Now, in this direction, the fields are perhaps wider and deeper than ever. This book is devoted to the study of hyponormal and semi-hyponormal operators. The main results we shall present are those of the author and his collaborators and colleagues, as well as some concerning related topics. To some extent, hyponormal and semi-hyponormal opera tors are 'close' to normal ones. Although those two classes of operators contain normal operators as a subclass, what we are interested in are, naturally, nonnormal operators in those classes. With the well-studied normal operators in hand, we cer tainly wish to know the properties of hyponormal and semi-hypo normal operators which resemble those of normal operators. The emphasis was on theoretical aspects of approximation, rather than the numerical side. Particular importance was placed on the related fields of functional analysis and operator theory. Thirty-nine papers were presented at the conference and one more was subsequently submitted in writing. All of these are included in these proceedings. In addition there is areport on new and unsolved problems based upon a special problem session and later communications from the partici pants. A special role is played by the survey papers also presented in full. They cover a broad range of topics, including invariant subspaces, scattering theory, Wiener-Hopf equations, interpolation theorems, contraction operators, approximation in Banach spaces, etc. The papers have been classified according to subject matter into five chapters, but it needs little emphasis that such thematic groupings are necessarily arbitrary to some extent. The Proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Jean Favard. It was Favard who gave the Oberwolfach Conference of 1963 a special impetus and whose absence was deeply regretted this time. An appreciation of his li fe and contributions was presented verbally by Georges Alexits, while the written version bears the signa tures of both Alexits and Marc Zamansky. The main purpose of this conference was to provide up-to-date information on important directions of research in the field of free boundary problems and their numerical solutions. The contributions contained in this volume cover the lectures given in the conference. The invited lectures were given by H.W. Alt, V. Barbu, K-H. Hoffmann, H. Mittelmann and V. Rivkind. In his lecture H.W. Alt considered a mathematical model and existence theory for non-isothermal phase separations in binary systems. The lecture of V. Barbu was on the approximate solvability of the inverse one phase Stefan problem. K-H. Hoff mann gave an up-to-date survey of several directions in free boundary problems and listed several applications, but the material of his lecture is not included in this proceedings. H.D. Mittelmann handled the stability of thermo capillary convection in float-zone crystal growth. V. Rivkind considered numerical methods for solving coupled Navier-Stokes and Stefan equations.
