For this construction we draw upon the methods of Alan Adolphson [1] in his 1976 work on Hecke polynomials. We are also indebted to him for the account (appearing as an appendix) of the relation between this differential equation and certain L-functions. We are indebted to G. Washnitzer for the method used in the construction of our dual theory (Chapter 2). These notes represent an expanded form of lectures given at the U. L. P. in Strasbourg during the fall term of 1980. We take this opportunity to thank Professor R. Girard and IRMA for their hospitality. Our subject-p-adic analysis-was founded by Marc Krasner. We take pleasure in dedicating this work to him. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Six years ago, in June 1977, the first international conference on chaos in classical dynamical systems took place here in Como. For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got together to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of 'Nonlinear Science Abstracts' started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous 'Nonlinear Centers' around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. The present meeting was organized in view of the fact that scientists working in different fields - mathematicians, theoretical physicists, solid state physicists, nuclear physicists, chemists and others - had common problems. Moreover, we felt that it was necessary to clarify some fundamental questions concerning the logical basis for the discussion including the very definition of chaos in Quantum Mechanics. 392 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This monograph, which was more than five years in preparation, represents a very detailed account of pheochromocytoma, a tumor that is almost invariably lethal if untreated. In addition to its definitive presentation of the subject, this volume contains the most cur rent information regarding the diagnosis and management of pheochromocytoma. It is im portant to reemphasize the seriousness of diagnosing and treating pheochromocytoma with the aphorism of Esperson and Dahl Iversen that although a pheochromocytoma may be morphologically benign it is physio logically malignant (280) and with Aranow's characterization of this tumor as a 'veritable pharmacological bomb' (20). If managed ap propriately by a highly skilled and profes sional 'bomb squad,' this tumor can be re moved and the patient cured in at least 90 percent of cases. The secret lies in first sus pecting and recognizing the patient who has and then offering the ex pheochromocytoma pert management such a patient requires. These facts more than justify this publication, since the internist, pediatrician, obstetrician, ophthalmologist, otolaryngologist, urologist, neurologist, surgeon, anesthesiologist, derma tologist, psychiatrist, radiologist, and also the dentist must be made acutely aware of the varied manifestations of this condition and of the pathologic entities which sometimes co- xiv Preface exist with pheochromocytoma. Furthermore, have included a large number of instructive they should have a thorough knowledge of the figures and have emphasized teaching tables. 428 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The central role of the ribonucleic acids (RNA) in mediating the expression of information encoded in DNA in living cells is now well established. Research in this area of biology continues at a remarkable rate, and new and significant information appears almost daily in a wide range of journals, published symposia and specialist reviews. The diverse nature of this information makes it difficult for the newcomer to the field of RNA biochemistry to obtain a general view of established concepts, current activity, and new advances. Moreover, the reviews available are frequently concerned with insular aspects of these Ubiquitous molecules, or in the case of text books, the subject is treated as part of a general outline of proper ties of nucleic acids and thus may be superficial. The authors of the chapters in this collection attempt to provide a comprehensive, though not overly detailed, outline of the biologi cal roles of RNA. They have written for students with basic training in biochemistry, but otherwise with a wide variety of biological interests-plant physiology, virology, organelle bio chemistry, genetics, cell biology, differentiation and development. Viral RNA, which was dealt with as a separate chapter in the first edition, has been deleted from this edition because it is an unman ageably large single topic, and at the same time is addressed in a number of ways in many different places in the book. 388 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The borderline of quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics offer spectacular results and problems concerning the foundations of radiation theory. Perhaps the major new viewpoint that has emerged from recent investigations is that one can now work inside a time-dependent quantum process, whereas up to now all elementary quantum processes were either stationary, or one worked with asymptotic in-and out-states, i.e. an S-matrix approach. In the-rirst part of this volume, the Quantum Electrodynamics, the present status of the main approaches to this most accurate of all physical theories are discussed: the Hamiltonian approach, the Green's function approach with particular emphasis to bound state problems, and the newer, nonperturbative approach. The latest numerical results on radiative corrections, Lamb shifts and anomalous magnetic moments are reviewed with new results for high Z atoms. Also discussed are different theoretical interpretations of the radiative phenomena as due to quantized field vacuum fluctuations or due to self energy. A small group of contributions are devoted to the physics and mathematical description of decaying or unstable states in quantum theory. This remarkable phenomenon of quantum theory still needs complete clarification, it is a time-dependent phenomenon, which can be described also by asymptotic S-matrix methods, but with complex energies. 484 pp. Englisch.

On December 2-4, 1985, under the sponsorship of the Tobacco and Health Research Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, leading scientists from around the world whose research efforts have focused on the role of nicotine in the tobacco habit participated in an International Symposium to provide the most comprehensive and ~xtensive coverage of this topic so far. The material discussed was in the forefront of man's knowledge about nicotine, and both lectures and question and answer sessions were stimulating and enlightening. This publication contains the manuscripts presented at the Symposium, along with an Overview prepared by selected individuals. Lecture and poster session topics are delineated more fully in the Overview. This volume is expected to serve as a definitive reference on nicotine as it relates to the tobacco habit. Symposium sessions were arranged under four headings: (1) behavioral effects of nicotine and nicotine~ependence in humans and animals, (2) neurohumoral regulation of neuroendocrine and cardiovascular function by nicotine, (3) neuropharmacology of nicotine, and (4) neurochemistry. This was the first assembly of this magnitude of scientists who had devoted years of research to nicotine and its effects. Indeed, it was a pleasure to have sponsored this important event. As its title suggests, this volume will be of interest to explorational geochemists who want to analyze their own data on a personal computer (PC). To make it easy for the user, the programs and two trial data sets are provided on the accompanying diskettes. And, by supplying the diskettes, another first is accom plished for the series: instant involvement and interaction for the user. Although other books in the series have provided listings of computer pro grams, Exploration-Geochemical Data Analysis with the IBM PC is the first to supply diskettes. The diskettes, along with the instructions outlined in the text, eliminate the bother (and errors) of pu tting the programs in man ually. The suite of programs for handling and sorting data files; computing and displaying summary statistics; and working with logarithms, geochemical thresholds, and regression - will give geochemists a good repertoire for geochemical exploration data analysis. The diskettes are easy to use and have been tested thoroughly. 192 pp. Englisch.

The symposium was held in order to exchange knowledge in the intriguing and complex field of sulfur biochemistry. This theme brought together scientists from many speciali zed areas from organic and physical chemistry to biology and medicine. The interdisciplinary nature of the meeting gave to the participants the opportunity to discuss pro blems of common interest approached from different scienti fic standpoints. This volume contains 47 contributions presented at the meeting which mainly deal with new structural and metabolic aspects of sulfur biochemistry. An important aspect of such a scientific meeting is the rapid publication of the proceedings. Through the cooperation of the authors in providing 'camera ready' copies of their manuscripts, the good efforts of the Orga nizing Committee, and the Plenum Press Publishing Co., it has been possible to publish this book within a few months of the meeting. 572 pp. Englisch.

The need stems from the interrelationships that exist between the health of Americans and the health status of the rest of the people on 'Spaceship Earth.' Disease does not respect national boundaries, and the frequency of travel and trade between countries increases each year. It further relates to the opportunities found in international settings to help solve health problems more effec tively and efficiently. This includes the unique human resources that are found throughout the world as well as certain natural ecological conditions that cannot be duplicated in the United States. The United States also has a responsibility to contribute to improved health status. Our tradition of humanitarianism alone supports such a re sponsibility, but our comparative wealth of technical and financial re sources dictates a requirement to participate. Modern political realities de fine relationships between developed and developing countries that will not allow us to isolate ourselves from the compelling health needs of a majority of the world's population. 508 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The papers in this volume were presented at an international symposium on Topics in Surface Chemistry which was held in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany., September 7-9, 1977. The symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany. It has been recognized for many years that our understanding of bulk phenomena and their subsequent exploitation depends largely on our ability to define correlations between microscopic structure and the physical and chemical phenomena of interest. The role played by surface phenomena in the overall behavior of a material has been a subject for speculation for a long time, but only during the last decade or so have experimental and theor etical tools been developed which make it possible to investigate surface structure and related surface phenomena uniquely. Numerous surface spectroscopies have been developed in recent years intended to describe the geometric, vibrational and electronic structure of a surface. Our present understanding of surface, thin film and interfacial phenomena in solid state physics owes much to these developments. In chemistry much of the interest in surface science has come from the obvious implications to such important and diverse fields as catalysis and corrosion. It takes little imagination to recognize that there are many other areas where advances in surface science can be brought to bear. 420 pp. Englisch.

To mark this occasion some of his colleagues and former students have prepared this volume. It contains articles that de scribe some of the topics that have attracted his attention since he first started his research work at University College London so many years ago. Seaton's association with University College London has now stretched over a period of some 37 years, first as an undergraduate student, then as a research student, and then, successively, as Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Reader, and Professor. Seaton arrived at University College London in 1946 to become an undergraduate in the Physics Department, having just left the Royal Air Force in which he had served as a navigator in the Pathfinder Force of Bomber Command. There are a number of stories of how his skill with instruments and the precision of his calcula tions, later to be so evident in his research, saved his crew from enemy action, and on one occasion, on a flight through the Alps, from a collision with Mount Blanc that at the time was shrouded in clouds. 380 pp. Englisch.

In this course another very large field of bioelectrochemistry, i. e. the field of Membrane Phenomena, was considered, which itself consists of several different, but yet related subfields. Here again, it can be easily stated that it is impossible to give a complete and detailed picture of all membrane phenomena of biological interest in a short course of about one and half week. Therefore the same philosophy, as the one of the first course, was followed, to select a series of lectures at postgraduate level, giving a synthesis of several membrane phenomena chosen among the most'important ones. These lectures should show the large variety of membrane-regulated events occurring in living bodies, and serve as sound interdisciplinary basis to start a special ized study of biological phenomena, for which the investigation using the dual approach, physico-chemical and biological, is unavoidable. Since, as already mentioned, it was impossible to exhaust, even roughly, is a short course like this, the presentation and introductory treatment of the extremely large variety of membrane phenomena, it can be expected that the third course will continue the subject of membrane phenomena deepening some ones presented in this course and introducing some new ones. vii CONTENTS Symbols and acronyms IX Opening address G. The spe ciality of rheumatology, once regarded as a 'Cinderella' speciality, is now one of the leading specialties in internal medicine. Indeed, just as infant mortality is a good index of the general health of a community, so a University Med ical School can be similarly judged by the quality of its Department of Rheumatology. Perhaps no other specialty has helped to advance knowledge in medicine as has rheu matology One might have thought that little could be added to the clinical and radiologic description of one of the most studied diseases in rheumatology~rheumatoid arthritis. There are several excellent large radiology textbooks on bones and joints, and it is surprising that yet another book has been published. However, the reader will soon appreciate on reading this superb radiologic text on rheumatoid arthritis that here is something new and quite different from what has been published in the past. The combination of clinician and radiologist has produced a textbook which will become a standard reference on the subject. The authors are both well known in their respective fields and they have concentrated on the early changes in the disease-not only those in the articular surfaces but also those in the soft tissues. In 1948 the late Dr Philip Ellman coined the term 'rheumatoid disease,' to indicate the systemic nature of rheumatoid arthritis. 148 pp. Englisch.

Moreover, phonons interact with all other excitations of the solid state and, thereby, influence most of its properties. Historically experimental information on phonon transport came from measurements of thermal conductivity. Over the past two decades much more, and much more detailed, information on phonon transport and on many of the inherent phonon interaction processes have come to light from experiments which use nonequilibrium phonons to study their dynamics. The resultant research field has most recently blossomed with the development of ever more sophisticated experimental and theoretical methods which can be applied to it. In fact, the field is moving so rapidly that new members of the research community have difficulties in keeping up to date. This NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) was organized with the objective of overcoming the information barrier between those expert in the field and those who are new to it. Thus it was decided to (i) organize a set of tutorially based lectures covering most of the important facets in the field, and (ii) to produce an Institute proceedings which would serve both as the first general textbook, as well as a valuable reference book, for this field of knowledge. 692 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the 70's it has become drastically apparent that our natural resources, including energy, are not in unlimited supply. This realization is strongly felt in the economic turmoil that is occurring, but its effects will penetrate into other areas, even causing moderate social changes. Chemists playa major role in coverting the world's natural resources into products. The public consumes these products and now depends upon them to keep the high standard of living to which they have become accustomed. This topic could easily be expounded into a whole article, but it is sufficent to say that almost everything-from the use of lightweight, strong polymers which are replacing the use of metals in today's automobiles, to the curing of diseases with asymetrically synthesized drugs-is related to the endeavors of chemistry. Catalysts have played a major role in transforming resources to useful products. Since a catalyst lowers the activation energy required for a particular reaction, and often for only one specific pathway where normally many exist, it is not surprising within the extant climate that researchers are now increasing their efforts and focusing their priorities on improving and discovering more efficient and selective catalysts. 1076 pp. Englisch.

The symposium from which this volume issues was an opportunity for us to invite a number of our friends to help in collecting some of the current contributions to this belief. The participants and topics weave a mosaic of the future. The selection was made in an attempt to project into the future what is most important in the present and in the relatively recent past in terms of generating hard data of the elusive cognitive-affect systems. We regret, because of editorial constraints, that we have not been able to include some of the outstanding contributions offered by our various chairmen. In particular, we are sorry that this volume does not reflect the thoughts of Robert Williams, R.J. Ellingson, William Fields, and especially those of our esteemed grand marshal, W. Grey Walter. This volume deals initially with the electroencephalographic measure ment of sleep profiles as such profiles may be used to measure the stresses of special environments and special patient populations. Of particular interest is the correlation of sleep profiles with basic endocrine functions. We expect the measurement of sleep profiles to become more of a routine clinical examination in the next few years, as our understanding of this fascinating state of consciousness increases in terms of how it is influenced by real life stresses and disease processes. 588 pp. Englisch.

The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panel on Human Factors of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, and supported by Panel VIII, AC/243, on 'Human and Biomedical Sciences'. Their sponsorship and support are gratefully acknowledged. The contributions in the book are grouped according to the main themes of the conference with special emphasis on analytical approaches, measurement of performance, and simulator design and evaluat ion. The design of manned systems covers many and highly diversified areas. Therefore, a conference under the general title of 'Manned Systems Design' is rather ambitious in itself. However, scientists and engineers engaged in the design of manned systems very often are confronted with problems that can be solved only by having several disciplines working together. So it was felt that knowledge about newly developed methods and equipment, applicable in the design process, is of common and increasing interest for all those who are engaged in the design of manned systems, from the earliest con ceptual design phases until operation under real circumstances. This seems to be particularly true in view of restricted resources of manpower and energy. 500 pp. Englisch.

Smulewicz Ultrasound imaging has reached a stage of sophistication where by diagnostic information can be gained without discomfort to the patient and with complete absence of morbidity and mortality. The procedure is quick, safe, noninvasive and in many instances can supersede and obviate more time-consuming procedures requiring catheterization, injection of a contrast material, and radiographic imaging. In obstetrical problems the danger of ionizing radiation to the fetus is eliminated. In debilitated and very ill patients this simple and painless method becomes the procedure of choice. Unique features of ultrasound equipment allow for pinpoint local ization oflesions and direct visual guidance of percutaneous puncture techniques for aspiration and biopsy. The accuracy of ultrasound guided punctures and the absence of side effects make this modality far superior to percutaneous invasive techniques performed with other imaging systems. Renal cyst puncture and amniocentesis are but two of the procedures in which ultrasonic guidance is the method of choice. v Dr. Hassani has throughly explained and carefully explored the wide variety of exam inations available with ultrasound. The large volume of material and the clear interpre- tion makes this book of great interest to all of the medical profession. In addition to the existing methods available for diagnostic in terpretations, this method of noninvasive diagnosis should find its way into every hospital or center where good medical care is provided. Virtually no facilities were available and most of the wartime scientists had left. So, when we started out, it was obvious to me that something had to be done to reestab lish research. Even more, because Oak Ridge was not known at that time for its biological work but rather for the separation of Uranium 235, nuclear reactor development, and radioisotope produc tion, a new tradition had to be promoted. Although good biological work had been done at Oak Ridge during the war to protect the workers and the results of this work were quite excellent, very few installations remained. When we started the work of the Biology Division, it became essential to make it part of the flow of mod~rn biology allover the world. As Director, I had to do more than just attract promising scientists. We created an atmosphere conducive to creative research and nurtured all of the other aspects of a productive laboratory. Of course, we carefully prepared the results of our work in publish able form. We made a sincere effort to invite seminar speakers and lecturers to come to Oak Ridge despite the sacrifices this presented to our early budget. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This, the second special topical conference on the properties of Non-Metallic Materials at Low Temperatures, was sponsored by the International Cryogenic Materials Conference Board. The potential for plastics materials in the field of cryogenics is vast and as yet only partly explored. In addition, many other materials, which qualify for the title non-metallic but are not 'plastics', have numerous possible outlets in low temperature technology. This conference aimed at providing a forum, whereby specialists from Industry, the Universities and from Government sponsored Institutions could assemble to discuss the extent of our current knowledge. As it transpired, the meeting was also to high light the considerable gaps that still exist in our fundamental understanding of the low temperature behaviour of these materials. On this theme, during the course of the conference, a reference was made to an almost forgotten quotation by Lord Kelvin, who said: 'When you cannot measure what you are speaking about, when you cannot express in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of a science, whatever the matter be.' This simple statement sums up the aims, objectives and hopefully the achievements of this conference. To discuss and disseminate the current knowledge on non-metallic materials in order that realistic predictions of in-service performance may be made. 412 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The International Statistical Institute was founded in 1885 and is therefore one of the world's oldest international scientific societies. The field of statistics is still expanding rapidly and possesses a rich variety of applications in many areas of human activity such as science, government, business, industry, and everyday affairs. In consequence, the celebration of the Institute's centenary in 1985 is of considerable interest not only to statisticians but also more widely to the international scientific community. As part of its centennial celebration planning the Institute decided to publish a volume of papers representing the immensely wide range of interests encompassed by statistics in its international context, viewed both from a historical and from a contemporary standpoint. We were fortunate in securing the services of Anthony Atkinson and Stephen Fienberg as Editors of this volume: they have worked hard over a period of several years to put together a most fascinating collection of papers. On behalf of the Institute it is my pleasant duty to thank them and the authors for their contributions. J. DURBIN, President International Statistical Institute Preface The papers in this volume were prepared to help celebrate the centenary of the International Statistical Institute. During the lSI's first 100 years statistics has matured, both as a scientific discipline and as a profession, in ways that the lSI's founders could not possibly have imagined. 628 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -While the previous two volumes in this series were based upon methodol ogy, theory, and the relationship between ecology and population structure, this book can be viewed as an in-depth case study. The population genetics of a multitude of diverse groups geographically distributed throughout the world was examined in the first two volumes. In contrast, this volume focuses upon a single ethnic group, the Black Caribs (Garifuna) of Central America and St. Vincent Island, and explores the interrelationships among the ethnohistory, sociocultural characteristics, demography, morphology, and genetic structure of the group. This volume offers a broad and intensive treatment of the Black Caribs and their interactions with surrounding populations. My interest in the genetics of the Black Caribs was sparked by an accidental meeting in Amsterdam, Holland, in March 1975. A conversation with Nancie Gonzalez at the Applied Anthropology Meetings revealed the 'truth-is-stranger than fiction' history of the Black Carib peoples of the Caribbean. This was a popUlation with a small-sized founding group and a unique biological success story. Nancie Gonzalez was particularly interested in estimating the Carib Indian admixture in the contemporary Garifuna popUlation. Given my previous experi ence in estimating Spanish and African admixture in the Tlaxcaltecan population (whose gene pool consisted predominantly of Indian alleles), a group that appeared to be primarily African with some Indian admixture was of great interest. Aside from the ethnohistorical interest, I believe that such a population may add conSiderably to our understanding of the inheritance of complex morphological traits. 416 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nearly a century ago, Emile Durkheim founded the sociology of educa tion on the French cultural and structural premise that the function of educators is to transmit culture from one generation to the next. The clarity of his vision was aided by the era, the place, and the actors in the learning environment. His was an era when the relatively seamless web of western culture, although ripping and straining, was still intact. The place, post-Napoleonic France, was vertically stratified and elaborately structured. And the teachers had reason to think they were agents of authority, whereas most students, during school hours at least, behaved as if they were the objects of that authority. Underlying the very notion of a sociology of education, then, was a visible and pervasive aura of a system and order that was culturally prescribed. Scholars of American education have yearned for such systems before and since Durkheim. Every European and English model has been emulated in a more or less winsome manner, from the Boston Latin School of the 1700s to the Open Education programs of the 1960s. In the last quarter century of research, it has begun to dawn on us, however, that no matter how hard American educators try, they do not build a system. 376 pp. Englisch.

The meeting was organized to commemorate the description of acromegaly by the French physician Pierre Marie, in 1886. The members of the Scientific Committee spent many hours assisting us in ensuring an outstanding meeting. The support of Serono Symposia, USA in all phases of the planning and execution of the meeting was sincerely appreciated and was highly professional. Special recognition roust be extended to Professor Roger Guillemin of the Salk Institute, whosp interest in medical history led him to devote a great deal of time and personal expense in obtaining information about the life of Pierre Marie. Dr. GuilIemin's presentation on the life and times of Marie was an extraordinary overview of the cultural, social, and scientific backgrounds in which Marie came to describe the disease, acromegaly. Dr. Guillemin' s findings, which were presented at the main banquet in a splendid audiovisual presentation, were clearly the highlight of the meeting and will long be remembered by the attendees. We were also honored by the presence of Dr. Martine Pierre Marie Granier, the great-granddaughter of Pierre Harie. In her address at the banquet, Dr. Granier provided several delightful and intimate vignettes concerning Pierre Marie, using old family records and photographs. The Scientific Committee wishes to extend its gratitude to Dr. Granier for adding immeasurably to the historical atmosphere of the meeting. 304 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Basic Issues in Rehabilitation of the Brain Damaged Definitions Because of the vagueness surrounding the term brain damage, it is nec essary at the outset to define the population to which this book may have some application. Although it is usual to speak of the brain damaged patient in a general way, the conditions referred to cover a variety of specific disorders. In this book we will be discussing only individuals who become brain-damaged as adults. We will be ad dressing ourselves specifically to adults who have sustained demon strable, structural brain damage. Those conditions in which brain dys function is a possible etiological agent, such as a number of functional psychiatric disorders, will not be considered. Thus the entire topic of mental retardation and early life brain damage will not be treated here, nor the many problems associated with minimal brain damage syn dromes in school age children. Modern psychiatric thinking has tended to blur the distinction between the so-called functional and organic disorders (d. Shagass, Gershon, & Friedhoff, 1977), but we would ad here to the view that the patient with structural brain damage contin ues to present relatively unique assessment and treatment problems. Furthermore, the emphasis of this book will be placed on individ uals with nonprogressive, chronic brain damage. 376 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Worldwide concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental com munities over traces of toxic chemicals in foodstuffs and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published progress reports, and archival documentations. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclusively for the diversified literature on 'toxic' chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surroundings, our domestic animals, our wild life, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to technical and other evaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authorita tive publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. 292 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In June 1973, Professor George Austin invited a small group of neuroscientists from Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada to the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. The fundamental technique of fashioning a small vessel collateral to the brain had been pioneered by Donaghy and Yasargil 5 years before and was now gaining momentum with the increased availability of the operating microscope, fine instruments and sutures, and surgeons trained in microvascular surgery. The interchange of ideas at this first conference was magic. The handful of participants returned home stimulated with new ideas of technique, patient selection, and postoperative evaluation and resolved to meet again on a regular basis. A Second International Symposium was hosted by Howard Reichman at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois in June of 1974; a Third Symposium at Rottach-Egern, West Germany in June of 1976 under Professor F. Marguth of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. 392 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The idea of holding an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) and getting a volume out, on the Nervous Systems in Invertebrates first cropped up in the summer of 1977 at the ASI on Sensory Ecology. I had prepared a review of the nervous systems in coelomates and noticed how much we depended on Bullock and Horridge's treatise on the one hand and how much new material and requirements has cropped up since 1965, when this classical work was published. Interest in the concerted study of pollution and environmental toxicology was growing in geometrical proportions and the use of invertebrates as indices was growing. As a teacher of a course on the biology of invertebrates since the beginning of my career I had also noticed how the interest of the students and the content of my course was shifting gradually and steadily from the traditional morphology-taxonomy type to the physiology-ecology-embryology orientation. Students were demanding to know the relevency of what they had to learn. Thus, after the ASI on Photoreception and Vision in Invertebrates held in 1982 the question of one on nervous systems was raised by a number of colleagues. It appeared then that the consensus was that the time was ripe to hold one and that it will be worthwhile. Therefore, as usual arrangements had to begin at least two years in advance. Most of the persons I contacted to lecture and write chapters on selected topics agreed enthusiastically. 688 pp. Englisch.
