The computational power cannot be provided by traditional processor architectures and shared bus type of interconnects. The simple reason for this fact is energy ef ciency: there exist orders of magnitude between the energy ef ciency of an algorithm implemented as a xed functionality computational element and of a software implementation on a processor.

The Genome Project has led to a huge number of available DNA sequences and, therefore, protein sequences. The Structural Genomics initiative largely aims to obtain 'new' folds not currently present in the Protein Data Bank. Yet, the number of available structures inevitably lags behind the number of sequences. At the same time, an equally important problem is to find out the types and scope of dissimilar (nonhomologous) protein sequences that adopt a similar fold. Assembling data and comprehension of the sequence space of protein folds should be very useful in computational protein structure prediction. This would enhance the scope of homology modeling, which currently is the method of choice. Thus, experimental and theoretical studies on the relationship between sequence and structure are critical. Figuring out the relationship between sequence and structure would further assist in the prediction of fibril structures observed in protein misfolding diseases, and in figuring out the conformational changes and dynamics resulting from mutations. Protein folding is one of the most important and challenging problems in current molecular and chemical biology.

The idea originally came from work that I did when applying the hydrodynamic analogy to study congested traffic flows in 1981. However, I was disappointed to find out that much…of the mathematical work had already been done decades earlier. When I looked for a new application, I realised that shopping centre demand could be like a longitudinal wave, governed by centre opening and closing times. Further, a solution to the differential equation was the gravity model and this suggested that time was somehow part of distance decay. This was published in 1985 and represented a different approach to spatial interaction modelling. The next step was to translate the abstract theory into something that could be tested empirically. To this end, I am grateful to my Ph. D supervisor, Professor Barry Garner who taught me that it is not sufficient just to have a theoretical model. This book is an outcome of this on-going quest to look at how the evolution of the model performs against real world data. This is a far more difficult process than numerical simulations, but the results have been more valuable to policy formulation, and closer to what I think is spatial science. The testing and application of the model required the compilation of shopping centre surveys and an Internet data set.

These processes include signal transduction, chemotaxis, cell motility, cytokinesis, phagocytosis, and aspects of development such as cell sorting, pattern formation and cell type differentiation. Recently, D- tyostelium was also described as a suitable host for pathogenic bacteria in which one can conveniently study the process of infection. In addition, Dictyostelium has many of the experimental conveniences of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and is pr- ably the best experimentally manipulatable protozoan, providing insight into this diverse group of organisms, which includes some of the most dangerous human parasites. The recent completion of the Dictyostelium genome sequencing project strengthens the position of D. discoideum as a model organism. The completed genome sequence and other valuable community resources constitute the source for basic biological and biomedical research and for genome-wide analyses.

Fluid circulation and deformation processes in crustal rocks are coupled, producing significant complexity of mechanical and fluid transport behavior. This often poses severe technical and economic problems for reservoir and geotechnical engineering projects involved in oil and gas production, CO2 sequestration, mining and underground waste disposal. For example, the depletion of hydrocarbon and water reservoirs leading to compaction may have adverse effects on well production. Solution/precipitation processes modify porosity and affect permeability of aquifers and reservoir rocks. Fracture damage from underground excavation will critically influence the long-term stability and performance of waste storage.Part I of this topical volume covers mainly the nucleation and evolution of crack damage in rocks, new or modified techniques to measure rock fracture toughness and a discussion of upscaling techniques relating mechanical and fluid transport behaviour in rocks at different spatial scales.Part II, to be published later in 2006, will include studies investigating the coupling of rock deformation and fluid flow. 278 pp. Englisch.
