The diseases them selves have been known for much longer; indeed clover phyllody, a typical example, was described… in the seventeenth century, well before any animal mycoplasma diseases had been documented. The early history of plant mycoplasmas is described in Chapter 2 and one obvious conclusion to be drawn from the frustrating experiences of the earlier workers is that the experimental methods at their disposal were simply inadequate for the task. Progress in science depends critically upon the development of new methods. Although important advances have been made in plant and insect mycoplasmology, notably in the discovery of spiroplasmas, many intractable problems remain. Most plant myco plasmas cannot yet be cultured in vitro, and their natural plant habitat, the phloem, is one of the most difficult plant tissues for the experi menter to handle, placing severe restrictions on the type of experiments which can be performed in vivo. It is clear that radically new methods may be required to solve these problems. A survey of the progress which has been made shows that application of techniques from a wide range of disciplines has been necessary. A successful individual or group of workers must possess the skills of a plant pathologist, a plantsman, a plant physiologist, a light-and electron microscopist, a bacteriologist, a biochemist, an immunologist, an ento mologist, a virologist and a molecular geneticist. 372 pp. Englisch.

Sixty-three carefully chosen profes sionals were invited to participate in this institute… together with 12 lecturers and 7 assistants. The 63 participants were selected from a group of almost 140 applicants. Each had the background to learn effectively the set of computer IC design aids which were presented. Each also had individual expertise in at least one of the topics of the Institute. The Institute was designed to provide hands-on type of experience rather than consisting of solely lecture and discussion. Each morning, detailed presentations were made concerning the critical algorithms that are used in the various types of computer IC design aids. Each afternoon a lengthy period was used to provide the participants with direct access to the computer programs. In addition to using the programs, the individual could, if his expertise was sufficient, make modifications of and extensions to the programs, or establish limitations of these present aids. The interest in this hands-on activity was very high and many participants worked with the programs every free hour. I hasten to add, however, that the desired model has yet to be perfected. The existence and usefulness of animal models of infectious diseases of man are well documented. Reproduction of disease by infecting an experimental animal satisfies the third of Koch's four postulates to establish proof of disease causation by a specific bacterium. Animal models also have been extremely useful in studies of the pathogenesis, immunoprophylaxis, and specific therapy of several important diseases, ineluding (with only modest success) influenza. The articles were written as a consequence of running a weekly clinic, concerned largely with the correction of refe…rred endodontic problems. In most cases the 'problems' did not exist and were treated simply by redoing the root filling or by undertaking a straightforward apicectomy. Regrettably, in many other cases, the problem would not have existed had the previously undertaken, and potentially simple, apicectomy been carried out competently. There is no good reason why apical surgery should not be undertaken by the general dental practitioner as part of the patient's overall treatment. After all, the problem will usually have arisen either during, or as a result of, routine dental treatment. In addition, the tooth may require to be restored, either at the time of surgery or fairly soon thereafter. Regrettably, inexperience in the handling of soft tissues, and concern about the risk of damage to associated structures, often deters the dentist from attempting what is, if sensibly approached, an uncomplicated minor dento-alveolar operation. Chapters 1-8 introduce the reader to the basic techniques of apicectomy. Chapters 9, 12, 16 and 17 will, it is hoped, help the interested dentist to develop a competence to treat more complex cases, once he or she has become proficient in the basic skills. 120 pp. Englisch.

It was not, however, until I960 that I could devote a significant portion of my time to a realization of this goal. My work was essentially completed in 1963, at which time it was presented in its original form as a doctoral dissertation in the Phi losophy Department of Columbia University. Since then I have made many minor improvements and several chapters have been extensively reworked. This study represents the first attempt in fifty years to give a detailed account of even a portion of Gianfrancesco Pico's life and thought. The most comprehensive previous study, Gertrude Bramlette Richards, 'Gianfrancesco Pico della lv1irandola' (Cornell University Dissertation, I 9 I 5), which I have found very useful in preparing my own book, is largely based on secondary literature and is mistaken in a number of details. Furthermore, Miss Richards' treatment of Gian francesco Pico as a thinker is very sketchy and is not an exhaustive study of his own writings. Each test method is reported together with (1) a data example from practice, (2) all steps to be taken using a scientific pocket calculator, and (3) the main results and their interpretation. Although several of the described methods can also be carried out with the help of statistical software, the latter procedure will be considerably slower. Both part 1 and 2 of this title consist of a minimum of text and this will enhance the process of mastering the methods. Yet the authors recommend that for a better understanding of the test procedures the books be used together with the same authors' textbook 'Statistics Applied to Clinical Studies' 5th edition edited 2012, by Springer Dordrecht Netherlands. More complex data files like data files with multiple treatment modalities or multiple predictor variables can not be analyzed with a pocket calculator. We recommend that the small books 'SPSS for starters', Part 1 and 2 (Springer, Dordrecht, 2010, and 2012) from the same authors be used as a complementary help for the readers' benefit. 88 pp. Englisch.

When one runs an Obesity Clinic there appears to be an unending series of patients who need help. Our understanding of weight control has been advanced not only by the s…tudies of obese patients but also by our investigation of the problems of weight gain in young women with anorexia nervosa. Just as among obese patients there is the group of 'efficient metabolizers' who can maintain their excessive weight with a calorie intake occasion ally as low as 600 kcal per day, so we have demonstrated that among anorexic women there are a few who may fail to gain normal weight with 3500 kcal per day. Some of the latter group may in fact develop T3 (tri-iodothyronine) thyrotoxicosis. One of the major unknown factors is still what determines when patients may be at these extremes. If we knew how to control these extremes we would like, for a time, to switch each to the opposite end of the spectrum. One factor which is becoming apparent from studying people in the machine which continually plots metabolic rate is that the metabolic response to food is a' major factor in determining a person's weight. In general terms there is a tendency for those who are below their ideal weight to have an increased metabolic response to food and those who are above ideal weight to have a reduced metabolic response to food. 124 pp. Englisch.
