Selective toxicity covers an immense field: most of the drugs used for treating illness in man and his economic animals, as well as all of the fungicides, insecticides, and weed killers that are used in agriculture. Essentially, this book is a discussion of the physical and chemical means which contribute to selectivity, and this is the basis of molecular pharmacology. _Selective Toxicity began as a course of lectures that Professor F. G. Young encouraged me to give in University College London, in 1948 and again in 1949. The first edition appeared in 1951, as a very small book because little was then known about the factors that provide selectivity. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - My book 'Asymptotic Expansions for Ordinary Differential Equations' published in 1965 is out of print. In the almost 20 years since then, the subject has grown so much in breadth and in depth that an account of the present state of knowledge of all the topics discussed there could not be fitted into one volume without resorting to an excessively terse style of writing. Instead of undertaking such a task, I have concentrated, in this exposi tion, on the aspects of the asymptotic theory with which I have been particularly concerned during those 20 years, which is the nature and structure of turning points. As in Chapter VIII of my previous book, only linear analytic differential equations are considered, but the inclusion of important new ideas and results, as well as the development of the neces sary background material have made this an exposition of book length. The formal theory of linear analytic differential equations without a parameter near singularities with respect to the independent variable has, in recent years, been greatly deepened by bringing to it methods of modern algebra and topology. It is very probable that many of these ideas could also be applied to the problems concerning singularities with respect to a parameter, and I hope that this will be done in the near future. It is less likely, however, that the analytic, as opposed to the formal, aspects of turning point theory will greatly benefit from such an algebraization.

Each problem in the text has been carefully selected to illustrate a specific concept. Included with each problem is at least one solution. An objective of the Workshop was to review some dynamic proper ties of condensed matter that can be studied using neutron spectros copy. A second objective, no less important, was to identify new topics that might be investigated with advanced spallation neutron sources. The twelve lectures reproduced in this volume bear wit ness, largely by themselves, to the success of the Workshop in meet ing these objectives. Für die Untersuchung des Tragverhaltens wurden die aufgebrachten Kräfte und Verschiebungen, die lokalen Deformationen der Betonoberfläche und der Beweh rungsstäbe sowie die Rissweiten gemessen. Die Rissentwicklung wurde photographisch festgehalten. Die Versuchsergebnisse lassen sich wie folgt zusammenfassen: - Im allgemeinen trat der Bruch durch seitliches Aufspalten des Betons und durch Abplatzen der Ueberdeckung in der Druckecke der Scheibe auf. Die mit hoher Vertikal kraft beanspruchten Scheiben wiesen eine über ihre ganze Länge gehende horizontale Zerstörungszone auf. - Bei den Versuchen mit geringer Vertikal kraft bildeten sich die ersten Risse bei 20% bis 35% der Maximal last. From production and marketing to financial management, a manager has to assess various costs imposed by uncertainty. The economist analyzes the role of incomplete and too often imperfect information structures on the optimal decisions made by a firm. The need for understanding the role of uncertainty in quantitative decision models, both in economics and management science provide the basic motivation of this monograph. The stochastic environment is analyzed here in terms of the following specific models of optimization: linear and quadratic models, linear programming, control theory and dynamic programming. Uncertainty is introduced here through the para meters, the constraints, and the objective function and its impact evaluated. Specifically recent developments in applied research are emphasized, so that they can help the decision-maker arrive at a solution which has some desirable charac teristics like robustness, stability and cautiousness. Mathematical treatment is kept at a fairly elementary level and applied as pects are emphasized much more than theory. Moreover, an attempt is made to in corporate the economic theory of uncertainty into the stochastic theory of opera tions research.
