There are two phases in Itera…tive Learning Control: first the long term memory components are used to store past control infor mation, then the stored control information is fused in a certain manner so as to ensure that the system meets control specifications such as convergence, robustness, etc. It is worth pointing out that, those control specifications may not be easily satisfied by other control methods as they require more prior knowledge of the process in the stage of the controller design. ILC requires much less information of the system variations to yield the desired dynamic be haviors. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, ILC has received considerable attention and applications in many areas for the past one and half decades. Most contributions have been focused on developing new ILC algorithms with property analysis. Since 1992, the research in ILC has progressed by leaps and bounds. On one hand, substantial work has been conducted and reported in the core area of developing and analyzing new ILC algorithms. On the other hand, researchers have realized that integration of ILC with other control techniques may give rise to better controllers that exhibit desired performance which is impossible by any individual approach.

The main objective was to integrate this new information in a series of top-quality presentations and discussions between investigators and clinicians addressing all aspects of H. pylori research and to review the current position and future research directions. The format included state-of-the-art presentations by world experts heavily involved in H. pylori research followed by in-depth discussion on intriguing or controversial issues. The presentations were grouped according to the leading theme: characteristics of the organism, mode of transmission, mechanisms of H. pylori-induced inflammation, causation of disturbances of gastric secretory and motor function, aspects of clinical presentation and management, problems related to H. pylori-associated gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT-lymphoma, novel aspects of antimicrobial therapy and vaccination. The meeting concluded with a synoptic agenda of suggested future studies for the microbiologist, the histopathologist and the clinician. The chapters published in these proceedings accurately reflect the content of the superb presentations. The reader will readily appreciate the excellent level of the `cutting-edge' research which was described and discussed. These proceedings are another testimony to the enormous impact on basic science and clinical medicine of the H. pylori discovery. Although much was achieved, it is also readily apparent that many questions remain to be answered and many problems remain to be solved.

Independently of them, Sandor Cs6rgO and Lajos Horv~th have… begun their work on this subject at Szeged University. The idea of writing a monograph together was born when the four of us met in the Conference on Limit Theorems in Probability and Statistics, Veszpr~m 1982. This collaboration resulted in No. 2 of Technical Report Series of the Laboratory for Research in Statistics and Probability of Carleton University and University of Ottawa, 1983. Afterwards David M. Mason has decided to withdraw from this project. The authors wish to thank him for his contributions. In particular, he has called our attention to the reverse martingale property of the empirical process together with the associated Birnbaum-Marshall inequality (cf.,the proofs of Lemmas 2.4 and 3.2) and to the Hardy inequality (cf. the proof of part (iv) of Theorem 4.1). The motivation is that once school teachers have glimpsed the possibilities, there will be a place for an 'ideas' book of short programs which will enable useful algorithms to be brought rapidly into classroom use, and perhaps even to be written and developed in front of the class. A scan of the contents will show how the conciseness of APL makes it possible to address a huge range of topics in a small number of pages. There is naturally a degree of idiosyncrasy in the choice of topics - the selection I have made reflects algo rithms which have either proved useful in real work, or which have caught my imagination as candidates for demonstrating the value of APL as a mathematical notation. I have omitted most of the previously examined historical and pharmacologi cal information because not much of what was previously discussed needed revision. On the other hand, because much more has been learned about the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure and its potential mechanisms of action, I have considerably expanded my discussion of these topics. In doing so, I have attempted to include as much new material as possible without (I hope) being overly pedantic and thereby losing the proverbial forest for the trees. No book is ever entirely neutral in the topics it discusses, the issues it raises, or in its conclusions. In sifting through hundreds and oftentimes thousands of articles, writers have to choose which facts to emphasize and which to ignore. Every idea cannot be chronicled and every article cannot (and should not) be cited. In going about the business of picking and choosing, however, a writer has an obligation to present the arguments for and against a particular conclusion. 276 pp. Englisch.

These 94 adults made up the sample of people in a study on adult development that Dale Dannefer and I began in 1980. This book represents my efforts to condense the almost 200 ho…urs of tape-recorded material from the 94 adults into a form that captures at least some of the diversity and also some of the commonalities in their answers to the ques tion 'Who am I ' My version of their answers is based on their reflections about themselves as family members, workers, and people with a goal in life. In arriv ing at the conclusion that adults attempt to see themselves as loved, competent, and good human beings, I believe that I have done justice to these people and their answers to my interview questions. Arriving at the point of being able to write about these 94 people's identities has not been an easy process. Countless attempts at numerically based rating systems were tried and discarded progressively, until finally I decided to read all the trans cripts in sequence, person by person rather than question by question. What I found when I approached them as total individuals was surprising to me. I found a vibrant theme of certainty and self-assuredness in their identities that flew in the face of my previous ideas about developmental change in adulthood. 280 pp. Englisch.
