Finally, the ideals of the just society meet with the play of self interest; social choice mechanisms can lend themselves to manipulation, and the analysis of conditions under which given ideals can be realised under self interest is a political parallel to the welfare economics of the market. Thermodynamics is taken for granted and is thought to be an almost depleted research area. Whatever the subterfuges, the hand-waving arguments, the paedagogical red herrings, the procedures work and nothing can be gained by allocating intellectual re sources to resolve ambiguities with few, if any, expected rewards. Continuing topics of interest include: development of a more distributed implementation of the computer control architecture, analysis of the dynamics of the Tetrobot system motion for improved control of high-speed motions, integration of sensor systems to control the motion and shape of the high-dimensionality systems, and exploration of self-reconfiguration of the system. In this monograph the authors present detailed and pedagogic proofs of persistence theorems for normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and their stable and unstable manifolds for classes of perturbations of the NLS equation. The authors' techniques are based on an infinite dimensional generalization of the graph transform and can be viewed as an infinite dimensional generalization of Fenichel's results.
