In particular, what our group terms 'model-based' modalities-which produce tissue property images from data using nonlinear, iterative numerical modeling techniques-have become increasingly feasible.Alternative Breast Imaging: Four Model-Based Approaches explores our research on four such modalities, particularly with regard to imaging of the breast: (1) MR elastography (MRE), (2) electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), (3) microwave imaging spectroscopy (MIS), and (4) near infrared spectroscopic imaging (NIS). Chapter 1 introduces the present state of breast imaging and discusses how our alternative modalities can contribute to the field. Chapter 2 looks at the computational common ground shared by all four modalities. Chapters 2 through 10 are devoted to the four modalities, with each modality being discussed first in a theory chapter and then in an implementation-and-results chapter. The eleventh and final chapter discusses statistical methods for image analysis in the context of these four alternative imaging modalities.Imaging for the detection of breast cancer is a particularly interesting and relevant application of the four imaging modalities discussed in this book. Breast cancer is an extremely common health problem for women; the National Cancer Institute estimates that one in eight US women will develop breast cancer at least once in her lifetime. Yet the efficacy of the standard (and notoriously uncomfortable) early-detection test, the x-ray mammogram, has been disputed of late, especially for younger women. Conditions are thus ripe for the development of affordable techniques that replace or complement mammography. The breast is both anatomically accessible and small enough that the computing power required to model it, is affordable.

Last but not least, all discussions, whether they were duringthesessionsoratabartable,weresprinkledwiththecharmandwitofthe twoguestsofhonor: DonCoxandRonReynolds. Theideaofhavingascienti c feast to celebrate their 60th birthday in Granada was actually conceived at a bar table in Seville, with plenty of manzanilla at hand, a couple of summers ago. That, perhaps, was the dif cult part of the project. The rest was relatively easy to achieve because Don and Ron are not only remarkable astronomers but they are also great human beings. Indeed, we had a very positive response from all parties involved: every person we talked to was enthusiastic about the celebration, and wanted to give their own point of view in this tertulia.

In addition, they include a eulogy for Peter Ruzicka by Shmuel Zaks. EuroSPIisaninitiative nancedbyaconsortiumofNordicresearchcentersanduser networks(SINTEF,DELTAandSTTF),ASQF, aGermanqualityassuranceassociation, and ISCN in Ireland, the coordinating network partner. The research papers describe innovative and signi cant work in software process improvement, which is relevant to the software industry. The papers are readable for a scienti c and industrial audience, and support claims with appropriately described evidence or references to relevant literature. Thirty-one papers were submitted in this year s research track, and each paper was sent to three or four members of the programcommittee or additional reviewers. Papers were evaluated according to originality, signi cance of the contribution, quality of the written and graphical presentation, research method applied, and appropriateness of comparison to relevant research and literature. Almost 100 reviews were received and 18 papers were selected for presentation in the research track, giving a rejection rate of 42%. Many high-quality submissions had to be rejected because of limited space in the conference program. The selected papers cover a wide area in software process improvement, from - provingagile developmentmethods, techniquesfor software processimprovement,and knowledgemanagementin software companiesto effort estimation and global software development. 224 pp. Englisch.
