However, some mathematical proofs are outlined or given in full to illustrate the derivation of the subject; these can be omitted without loss of understanding. The book does aim at making clear the scope and nature of those essential tests and methods that a scientist or technologist is likely to need; to this end each chapter has been divided into sections with their own subheadings and some effort has been made to make the text unambiguous (if any reader finds a misleading point anywhere I hope he will write to me about it). Also with this aim in view, the equality of probability to proportion of population is stated early, then the normal distribution and the taking of samples is discussed. This occupies the first five chapters. With the principles of these chapters understood, the student can immediately learn the significance tests of Chapter 6 and, if he needs it, the analysis of variance of Chapter 7. For some scientists this will be most of what they need. Howcver, they will be in a position to read and/or use the remaining chapters without undue difficulty.

Needless to say, the success of the Symposium which took place between April 7 and 10, 1975 in Philadelphia, Pa., is due to their excellent cooperation and the enthusiastic response of con tributors. As originally planned, each division was responsible for one session, and most of the papers, including several late con tributions, are published in these two volumes of proceedings. During the Symposium, we held a banquet in honor of Professor Herman Mark in celebration of his eightieth birthday. His Plenary Lecture and the Symposium Address by Professor Murray Goodman are published in full at the beginning of the first volume. I thank Professors Mark and Goodman for their excellent presentations on this memorable occasion.

Thus, examples of low-dimensional systems are structures with one or several layers, single lines or patterns of lines, and small clusters isola…ted or dispersed in solid systems. Such low dimensional features can be produced in a wide variety of materials systems with a broad spectrum of scientific and practical interests. These features, in turn, induce specific properties and, particularly, specific transport properties. In the case of zeolites, low dimensionality appears in the network of small-diameter pores of molecular size, extending in one, two or three di mensions, that these solids exhibit as a characteristic feature and which explains the term of 'molecular sieves' currently used to name these ma terials. Indeed, a large number of industrial processes for separation of gases and liquids, and for catalysis are based upon the use of this low dimensional feature in zeolites. It is the author's experience that an outline of these methods is not always easy to locate in summary form, and that their usefulness is often not sufficiently appreciated. Inclusion of these methods in the early chapters has been aimed at simplifying discussion in the later chapters which are more particularly concerned with kinetic systems. By the provision of a number of worked examples and problems, it is hoped that the reader will develop a feeling for the range of methods available and for their relative merits. Throughout the text, the mathematical treatment has been kept relatively simple, lengthy proofs being avoided. Forbes Dewey, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The meeting itself was held June, 1976 at the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsy1vani~, under the joint sponsorship of Totts Gap Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with financial support from the American Heart Association, the Office of Naval Research, and the Smith, Kline and French Company. The objective of the series of meetings, beginning at Lindau has been to examine from an interdisciplinary and international point of view the fundamental physiologic and pathophysiologic processes pertinent to the development of arteriosclerosis. This colloquium sought to examine critically the evidence relating hemodynamic forces to atherogenesis, to reconcile disparate findings and interpretations in so far as possible; and to make a synthesis of the present state of knowledge of the dynamics of arterial flow. Dr. Welch and his wife were able to bring together a distinguished group of scientists from all parts of the world. It was very remarkable to be able to discuss the physiological aspects of noise with representative scientists from Israel, France, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Canada and Argentina. Dr. and Mrs. Welch ran the meeting in a delightful manner and continued to maintain interest and enthusiasm. Now the results of the conference are available. It is to be hoped that this volume will find wide interest and attention. We must differentiate noise from sound. Noise is unpleasant, unwanted or intolerable sound. On the other hand, even ordinary sound may at times be unpleasant, simply because we are not con ditioned to it. The general impression that one gets from reading the various reports on the physiological effects of noise is bad. It's a pollutant that we can each individually reduce, and maybe we can have a great enough effect socially so that we can significantly lower the noise levels which may result in considerable harm to us. It is interesting that noise as a pollutant has only recently attracted attention. 384 pp. Englisch.

Although, according to its preface, Volume 5 was to be the las…t one of the treatise, these recent developments have led to a revision of that statement. The present volume and its companion, still in preparation, deal with topics that were already mentioned in the preface to Volume 5 as gaining in importance. The recent development of X-ray and, more particularly, neutron scattering techniques have led to studies of 'structure' in aqueous solutions of electrolytes on the one hand, and to the role of water in protein structure and function on the other. Both these topics have reached a stage where reviews of the present state of knowledge are useful. The application of ab initio methods to calculations of hydration and conformation of small molecules has a longer history, but here again a critical summary is timely. The role of solvent effects in reaction kinetics and mechanisms should have had a place in Volume 2 of this treatise, but, as sometimes happens, the author who had taken on this task failed tQ live up to his promise. However, since 1972 the physical chemistry of mixed aqueous solvents has made considerable strides, so that the belated discussion of this topic (by a new author) is built on evidence that was not available at the time of publication of Volume 2. 472 pp. Englisch.

The purpose of this course was to gather information and to draw attention to the role of diet in the pathogenesis of experi mental and human arteriosclerosis, as well as its prevention and therapy. Konrad Bloch, in the opening lecture, emphasized the features unique to fatty acid synthesis in animal tissues and discussed the importance of comparative biochemical research in the study of control mechanisms of lipid biosynthesis. The lectures in the morning were followed in the afternoon by short practical demonstrations (R. Angelico, O. Lostia, A. Menotti, D.H. Blankenhorn, A. Ferro Luzzi). Particular attention was paid to the problem of dietary edu cation in Italy, during a round-table discussion on November 2nd (G. Bergami, G. Ricci, G. Crepaldi, F. Fidanza, S.F. Feruglio, M. Proia, A. Mariani, L. Ribolzi). The educational purpose of the course is obvious in Italy, a country where the people had been accustomed for centuries to the intake of a virtually nonatherogenic diet, until, quite recently, the migration from agricultural to industrialized areas assumed sociologically significant levels. The organization of Orbis this year was due mainly to the moderators of the sessions, principally Sydney Meshkov, Murray Gell-Mann, Yoichiro Nambu, Glennys Farrar, Fred Zachariasen and Behram Kursunoglu, who was also chairman of the conference. The coherence of the various sessions is due to their efforts, and special thanks are due to Sydney Meshkov who was responsible for coor dinating many.of the efforts of the moderators and for including essentially all of the frontier developments in high energy physics. Because of the number of papers and their integrated length, it has been necessary to divide these proceedings into two volumes. An effort has been made to divide the material in the two volumes into fundamental questions (including the appearance of magnetic charge in particle physics) and recent high energy results and attendant phenomenology. These volumes were prepared by Mrs. Helga Billings, Mrs. Elva Brady and Ms. Yvonne Leber, and their dedication and skill are gratefully acknowledged. To be sure, the highly developed countries of North America, Western Euro…pe, Ja pan, and Australia have generally had well-known national psychological societies for most of this century, and consider able information about their universities and institutes has been published at one time or another. But even in these more highly developed countries, the rapid changes of recent years are not well known. In any event, what information has been published is scattered so widely that it is hardly accessible when needed. Still less well known is the growth of psychology in the developing countries of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, and at least for Western readers, even the modem nations of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are relatively unknown. Only recently have most Western psychologists become aware of the fact that psychology as they know it is provincial. For some time now, there has been available information dealing with pharmacogenetics and behavior genetics. Recently, with ever-increasing frequency, however, data have been accumulating that deal with the effects of specific drugs on behavior and behavioral responses in animals with known genetic background. Initially, the data were gathered in various species and in a number of strains within given species of animals. With the availability of mutations, inbred strains, segregating strains of various types, recombinant inbred strains and congenic lines, the experimental approach to psychopharmacogenetics has now reached a new peak of sophistication. Finally, we explain in Section 1. 2 the aim… of this study. 1. 1 THE CONCEPT OF FAILURE. In this monograph we investigate the predictability of corporate failure. By 'failure' we understand the inability of a firm to pay its obligations when these fall due (i. e. technical cash insolvency). (Walter 1957 and Donaldson 1962 and 1969). Failure mostly appears in a critical situation as a consequ ence of a sharp decline in sales. Such a decline can be caused by a recession, the loss of an important customer, shortage of a raw material, deficiencies of management, etc. The ability to predict corporate failure is important for all parties involved in the corporation, in particular for management and investors. An early warning signal of probable failure will enable them to take preventive measures: changes in operating policy or reorganization of financial structure, but also voluntary liquidation will usually shorten the period over which losses are incurred. The possibility to predict failure is important also from a social point of view, because such an event is an indication of misallocation of resources; prediction provides opportunities to take corrective measures. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium 'Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides' was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. His first widespread use of these natural materials in which their crystalline nature was of importance was undoubtedly in fabricating jewelry and otherwise adorning his weapons, tools, and household items. Both the Old and New Testa ments of the Bible document the use of crystalline gems, and the Romans are credited with first employing diamonds-a metastable crystalline form of carbon-in jewelry. Various civilizations appear to have ascribed magical powers to some natural crystals, and they are known to have been widely accepted in Europe as having medicinal properties during the Middle Ages. Given early man's appreciation of the symmetry and beauty of natural crystals, it is not surprising that his earliest interest in working with these materials appears to have been directed toward techniques for duplicating or manufacturing these sub stances that were so highly valued as gems. Although the exact beginning of the science that we now know as 'crystal growth' cannot be precisely specified, we do know that Robert Boyle had attempted to grow crystals that could be used as gems prior to 1672.
