In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Early one morning in April of 1987, the Chinese mathematician J. -Q. Zhong died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York. He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other two in that it gives a firsthand account of the work done in the People's Republic of China in several complex variables in the last four decades.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.

One of the sessions related to this theme was 'Transport Processes in the Oceans' chaired by R. P. Shaw and R. J. Gibbs. This session was devoted to the study of transport processes and their hydrodynamic modeling in large water bodies such as oceans and lakes; transport of both dissolved and solid material was con sidered. The interest developed at the session led to the conclu sion that the papers presented there should be published as a set rather than dispersed among the various technical journals that rep resent the wide variety of technical affiliations of the authors. This variety, in fact, is typical of this particular field with con tributors identified as chemical engineers, civil engineers, environ~ mental engineers, mechanical engineers, oceanographers and applied mechanicians to name just a few. Such an interdisciplinary area re quires more effort in keeping abreast of developments than do the traditional areas, since new material may be developed and presented in a wide range of technical journals and professional meetings. 300 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Data analysis is important from two points of view: first, it enables a large mass of information to be reduced to a reasonable compass, and second, it assists in the interpretation of experimental results against some framework of theory. The purpose of this text is to provide a practical introduction to numerical methods of data analysis which have applica tion in the field of experimental chemical kinetics. Recognizing that kinetic data have many features in common with data derived from other sources, I have considered it appropriate to discuss a selection of general methods of data analysis in the early chapters of the text. It is the author's experience that an outline of these methods is not always easy to locate in summary form, and that their usefulness is often not sufficiently appreciated. Inclusion of these methods in the early chapters has been aimed at simplifying discussion in the later chapters which are more particularly concerned with kinetic systems. By the provision of a number of worked examples and problems, it is hoped that the reader will develop a feeling for the range of methods available and for their relative merits. Throughout the text, the mathematical treatment has been kept relatively simple, lengthy proofs being avoided. I have preferred to indicate the 'sense' and usefulness of the various methods rather than to justify them on strict mathematical grounds. 140 pp. Englisch.

The first follow-up colloquium on 'The Smooth Muscle of the Artery' was held in Heidelberg in 1973. Planning for the present one was undertaken by the editors with Dr. C. Forbes Dewey, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The meeting itself was held June, 1976 at the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsy1vani~, under the joint sponsorship of Totts Gap Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with financial support from the American Heart Association, the Office of Naval Research, and the Smith, Kline and French Company. The objective of the series of meetings, beginning at Lindau has been to examine from an interdisciplinary and international point of view the fundamental physiologic and pathophysiologic processes pertinent to the development of arteriosclerosis. This colloquium sought to examine critically the evidence relating hemodynamic forces to atherogenesis, to reconcile disparate findings and interpretations in so far as possible; and to make a synthesis of the present state of knowledge of the dynamics of arterial flow. Grateful acknowledgement is made for the valuable assistance of Joan Martin and Helen Goodell in the entire editorial process. The editors acknowledge with thanks the secretarial assistance of Moira Martin, Colleen Nagle, Cindy Carter and Pat Ide. Special thanks are due Joy Lowe who executed the entire final manuscript. 484 pp. Englisch.

This growth has greatly expanded our understanding of the electrical properties and ultrastructure of chemosensory organs, of the role of chemoreception in the control of behavior, of the organization of higher centers in the chemosensory pathways, and of the chemical constituents of mixtures of biologic significance. But one area where advances have been especially impressive is concerned with the properties of pheromones and substances with similar biologic effects. Pheromones are compounds, produced by certain animals, which have the effect of inducing one or more specific responses within members of the same or closely related species. Some of these substances-the 'primer' pheromones-act on the endocrine system, probably through the central nervous system. The pregnancy block induced in mice by the odor of strange males is a striking example. Others, such as 'signalling' or 'releaser' pheromones, elicit an immediate behavioral response. Sex attractants are prominent examples of this group. While the chemical identity of these compounds is known, in a relatively few cases (and these, mainly in insects) we now have extensive information about their impact on the receiving organism at the receptor, physiologic and behavioral levels. 428 pp. Englisch.

To be sure, the highly developed countries of North America, Western Europe, Ja pan, and Australia have generally had well-known national psychological societies for most of this century, and consider able information about their universities and institutes has been published at one time or another. But even in these more highly developed countries, the rapid changes of recent years are not well known. In any event, what information has been published is scattered so widely that it is hardly accessible when needed. Still less well known is the growth of psychology in the developing countries of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, and at least for Western readers, even the modem nations of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union are relatively unknown. Only recently have most Western psychologists become aware of the fact that psychology as they know it is provincial. With more than half of the world's highly trained psychologists in Canada and the United States, which together devote far more of their national resources to psychological research than is true of any other countries in the world, it is not surprising that the North American journals, psychological associations, institutes, clinics, and other manifestations of psychology have completely domi nated the field, at least until recently. 316 pp. Englisch.

A number of chapters by other contributors were invited to help round out the volume. New chapters are those by Glassman and Wilson; Squire and Barondes; Ungar; Jankovic; Hyden and Lange; Koenig; Appel; Rosenzweig, Bennett, and Diamond; and Deutsch. I the concept of failure used in this study. Thereafter, we discuss briefly the causes and possible consequ ences of failure. Finally, we explain in Section 1. 2 the aim of this study. 1. 1 THE CONCEPT OF FAILURE. In this monograph we investigate the predictability of corporate failure. By 'failure' we understand the inability of a firm to pay its obligations when these fall due (i. e. technical cash insolvency). (Walter 1957 and Donaldson 1962 and 1969). Failure mostly appears in a critical situation as a consequ ence of a sharp decline in sales. Such a decline can be caused by a recession, the loss of an important customer, shortage of a raw material, deficiencies of management, etc. The ability to predict corporate failure is important for all parties involved in the corporation, in particular for management and investors. An early warning signal of probable failure will enable them to take preventive measures: changes in operating policy or reorganization of financial structure, but also voluntary liquidation will usually shorten the period over which losses are incurred. The possibility to predict failure is important also from a social point of view, because such an event is an indication of misallocation of resources; prediction provides opportunities to take corrective measures. (See also Lev 1974, p. 134). 1. 2 AIM AND OUTLINE OF THE STUDY. 132 pp. Englisch.

The discipline of gynecology and obstetrics, recogniz ing the importance of these problems and the need for spe cial expertise in reproductive endocrinology and its atten dant clinical challenges in fertility and infertility, has now formalized the training of specialists in this area of scientific knowledge in a further effort to advance the skills of diag nosis and treatment attendant on these complex problems. Slowly but steadily, as befits the complexity of the endocrine and metabolic pathways involved, the scientific basis of reproductive physiology has been revealed by the research of physicians, biochemists, and physiologists. It is clear that no significant clinical advance can be made with out the foundation of such new knowledge. Indeed, the successful treatment of infertility resulting from failure of ovulation was based on just such a scientific advance. 316 pp. Englisch.

Most extant tre atments of the subject are multi-authored, even when they deal with just one of these various subdivisions. Moreover, the corresponding specialists have seen the cancer problem as one within the purview of their own calling. In nature, however, the problem is a unity: its immunology, biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, for example, are closely interdependent. Con sequently, its proper appraisal requires detailed examination of all of the major parts, but with the primary aim of a single-minded and hence unified survey of the whole. The present work is an offering in this direction. It is addressed specifically to all practising oncologists, whether clinical or ex perimental, and generally to all serious students of the growth of oncology and medicine from ancient to modern times. 448 pp. Englisch.

Following the evolvment of the initial principles and techniques during the closing decade of the last century, microwave engineering has long matured to a stage of ready availability of components, automation and accuracy of measurement, economical manufacturing methods, and application of sophisticated systems. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Hence, it is now practicable to consider a comprehensive treatment of these two fields, division being made by subject matter rather than by the artificial distinctions of frequency and/or wavelength ranges. However, a full text on the combined subjects would be very large and unwieldy and, thus, this Bibliography is presented in the hope that it will prove useful as a compact reference source to a large body of workers and, by putting forward the latest scientific and technical advances, stimulate a multi-disciplinary approach. The material of the book commences with the fundamentals of radiation and matter, progressing through components and devices, amplification and generation, transmission, reception and processing of information, and methods of measurement to conclude with a wide range of applications. 752 pp. Englisch.

However, some of them have found their way into the biosphere and have been classi fied as persistent toxic chemicals. This has resulted in serious concern about environmental contamination. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium 'Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides' was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. The symposium was held during the l37th National American Chemical Society Meeting at Los Angeles, California, during April, 1974. The three sessions in the sym posium were chai'red by Drs. V.H. This destructive and wasteful ability has increas~d dramatically over recent years. At the same time however the need for conservation, particularly of plants as a resource for the future, has also become apparent, along with the realisation that advanced technologies can produce more from existing agricultural and forest regions. This may to some extent relieve the heavy pressure on the vulnerable areas where short term over-exploitation leads to permanent destruction of whole ecosystems, and the attendant loss, for ever, of many of the animals and plants which originally lived there. There still remains today a vast number of plant species whose potential is unknown. Maybe they will never have more than aesthetic value to mankind. But who knows where, for example, the next anti cancer agent may be found. And anyway future generations may not be ready to accept such anthropocentric values, and the options should be kept open for the philosophical concept that all life on earth has a right to exist and that man has none to exterminate. 356 pp. Englisch.

Of particular interest to the organisers was the very clear change in the nature of the delegates attending this second symposium as compared with the first. At the previous meeting the majority of the delegates were composed of chromatographers with problems in the area of chiral separations who were keen to learn as much as possible about these techniques from the handful of recognised experts in this area. The interests covered by the papers at one of these conferences vary from year to year and as a whole cover a wide spread of topics. This is as it should be. Old problems that have been with us for many years are being attacked again with new and more effective tools, new problems are continually arising, and new methods of great power are being developed. These developments are occurring in each of the fields covered, as may readily be seen by a glance at this twelfth volume and other recent volumes of this series. It seems clear that the policy of having these conferences and these volumes cover a wide field rather than a single one such as, for example, structure determination, or fluorescence analysis, is a policy that meets with general approval and should be continued. I understand there is every intention to do so. C. S. Barrett It is customary to acknowledge in each volume the invited session chairmen of the three-day meeting. His first widespread use of these natural materials in which their crystalline nature was of importance was undoubtedly in fabricating jewelry and otherwise adorning his weapons, tools, and household items. Both the Old and New Testa ments of the Bible document the use of crystalline gems, and the Romans are credited with first employing diamonds-a metastable crystalline form of carbon-in jewelry. Various civilizations appear to have ascribed magical powers to some natural crystals, and they are known to have been widely accepted in Europe as having medicinal properties during the Middle Ages. Given early man's appreciation of the symmetry and beauty of natural crystals, it is not surprising that his earliest interest in working with these materials appears to have been directed toward techniques for duplicating or manufacturing these sub stances that were so highly valued as gems. Although the exact beginning of the science that we now know as 'crystal growth' cannot be precisely specified, we do know that Robert Boyle had attempted to grow crystals that could be used as gems prior to 1672. The Conferences were held annu ally from 1961 to 1973 and have been held biennially since 1975 when our Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University became the Permanent Sponsor of the Conferences. These Conferences provide a broadly based forum for researchers actively working on the thermal conduc tivity and closely related properties to convene on a regular basis to exchange their ideas and experiences and report their findings and results. The Conferences have been self-perpetuating and are an example of how a technical community with a common purpose can transcend the invisible, artificial barriers between disciplines and gather together in increasing numbers without the need of national pub licity and continuing funding support, when they see something worthwhile going on. It is believed that this series of Conferences not only will grow stronger, but will set an example for research ers in other fields on how to jointly attack their own problem areas. 788 pp. Englisch.

This number will undoubtedly increase as more and more people attain their full lifespan. The Veterans Administration is acutely aware of this problem in the population it serves. Currently, there are about 31 million veterans in the United States. About 13 percent of these veterans are over 6S years of age and the number is expected to increase to 40 percent by the turn of the century. In recognition of the pressing need to address this problem, eight Geriatric Research, Educational and Clinical Centers (GRECC) have been established under the auspices of the Veterans Administration and the guiding spirit of Dr. Paul Haber, Assistant Chief Medical Director for Professional Services, Veterans Administration. The purpose of these centers is to develop a better understanding of the complex biomedical and socio-economic problems of the aged in general and to enhance the quality of life of the older veterans in particular o Gerontologists working towards a better understanding of the aging process and better care of the aged have made major progress in the biomedical field in the last decade. Among the efforts made by the Veterans Administration, the department of Extended Care and Academic Affairs have sponsored a number of symposia in the field of Gerontology. 320 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book contains all the papers presented at the NATO workshop on 'Optical Switching in Low Dimensional Systems' held in Marbella, Spain from October 6th to 8th, 1988. Optical switching is a basic function for optical data processing, which is of technological interest because of its potential parallelism and its potential speed. Semiconductors which exhibit resonance enhanced optical nonlinearities in the frequency range close to the band edge are the most intensively studied materials for optical bistability and fast gate operation. Modern crystal growth techniques, particularly molecular beam epitaxy, allow the manufacture of semiconductor microstructures such as quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots in which the electrons are only free to move in two, one or zero dimensions, of the optically excited electron-hole pairs in these low respectively. The spatial confinement dimensional structures gives rise to an enhancement of the excitonic nonlinearities. Furthermore, the variations of the microstruture extensions, of the compositions, and of the doping offer great new flexibility in engineering the desired optical properties. Recently, organic chain molecules (such as polydiacetilene) which are different realizations of one dimensional electronic systems, have been shown also to have interesting optical nonlinearities. Both the development and study of optical and electro-optical devices, as well as experimental and theoretical investigations of the underlying optical nonlinearities, are contained in this book. 396 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Underlying the design of the Handbook of Psychopharmacology is a prejudice that the study of drug influences on the mind has advanced to a stage where basic research and clinical application truly mesh. These later volumes of the Handbook are structured according to this conception. In certain volumes, groups of drugs are treated as classes with chapters ranging from basic chemistry to clinical application. Other volumes are assembled around topic areas such as anxiety or affective disorders. Thus, besides chapters on individual drug classes, we have included essays addressing broad areas such as 'The Limbic-Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal System and Human Be havior' and 'Peptides and the Central Nervous System. ' Surveying these diverse contributions, one comes away with a sentiment that, far from being an 'applied' science borrowing from fundamental brain chemistry and physiology, psychopharmacology has instead provided basic researchers with the tools and conceptual approaches which now are advancing neurobiology to a central role in modern biology. Especially gratifying is the sense that, while contributing to an understanding of how the brain functions, psychopharmacology is a discipline whose fruits offer genuine help to the mentally ill with promises of escalating benefits in the future. The human and economic costs of the ESRD program serve to emphasize the need to prevent or to arrest those diseases resulting in chronic renal failure, since none of the available treatments is without complications and/or side effects. The ESRD program, the only federal one that provides coverage for a catastrophic illness for almost the entire population (those qualifying under Social Security), cost almost $2 billion in 1983. The escalating costs of the ESRD program are attributed to the increasing number of patients requiring treatment and have focused concerns of the United States Government, both Congress and the administration, on ESRD. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), especially the Kidney, Urology, and Hematology Division of the National Institutes of Arthritis, Diabetes, and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIADDK), supports a sizable research program that bears on chronic renal disease and in association with this has sponsored many conferences and workshops on research on and causes and complications of chronic renal failure. This book is an outgrowth of the issues addressed by participants at a number of NIH conferences held in the 1980s. 624 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Immune Complexes and Human Cancer, the fifteenth volume of Contem porary Topics in Immunobiology, is a compilation of information derived from recent studies on the role of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in the patho genic manifestations of a variety of human cancers. Technical improvements in the detection of CIC in body fluids have resulted in data that indicate that CIC do occur in different types of cancer. In addition, tumor-associated antigens and antibodies have been detected in immune complexes of cancer patients' sera. Until recently the exact role and clinical relevance of immune complexes have been the subject of debate, partially because of the problems encountered in measuring immune complexes. But these problems are being confronted as more accurate measurement protocols are developed. Technical refinements, along with strict protocols, have provided evidence of heterogeneity in CIC, a factor that makes accurate detection of immune complexes in cancer patients difficult. Recent insights indicate that the measurement of immune complexes in cancer patients may be clinically useful not only as a tumor marker, but also in regard to the deranged immune response of tumor-bearing hosts and other disorders such as nephrotic syndrome, immune anemias, and clotting dysfunction. 300 pp. Englisch.

The present volume is the proceedings of that conference, and contains all manuscripts received prior to 1 August 1979, representing scientific contributions presented. A few manus cripts were not received, but for completeness the corresponding abstract is printed. No record was kept of the discussion, so that some of the flavor of the meeting is missing. This is par ticularly unfortunate in the case of some topics which were in a stage of rapid development and where the papers presented sti mulated much discussion - such as the sessions on spatial dis persion and resonance inelastic (Brillouin or Raman) scattering in crystals, enhanced Raman scattering from molecules on metal surfaces, and the onset of turbulence in fluids. The background and history of the US-USSR Seminar-Symposia on light scattering was given in the preface to the proceedings of the First Symposium held in Moscow May 1975, published as 'Theory of Light Scattering in Condensed Matter' ed. B. Bendow, J. L. Birman, V. M. Agranovich (Plenum Press, N. Y. 1976). Strong scientific interest on both sides in continuing this series resulted in a plan for the second symposium to be held in New York in 1977. For a variety of reasons it was necessary to cancel the planned 1977 event, almost at the last minute. 560 pp. Englisch.

It is now a major international forum, held every two years in Cape Sounion, Greece, in which the present and the future of this important area of research in drug carriers is discussed in great depth. Four previous ASls of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu and with ways by which the latter influences such interaction. The present book contains the proceedings of the 5th NATO ASI 'Targeting of Drugs: Optimization Strategies' held in Cape Sounion during 24 June-5 July, 1989. A logical sequel to the last one, the ASI deals with strategies by which milieu inter ference curtailing the function of drug carriers is circumvented or removed. We express our appreciation to Drs. R. Langer and E. Tomlinson for their valuable advice throughout the planning of the ASI and to Dr. G. Deliconstantinos who, as Chairman of the Local Committee contributed so effectively to its success. The ASI was held under the sponsorship of NATO Scientific Affairs Division and co-sponsored and generously financed by Smith Kline French Laboratories (now SmithKline Beecham), Philadelphia, USA. Financial assistance was also provided by CIBA Geigy (Horsham), Schering (West Berlin), Farmitalia Carlo Erba (Milan), Liposome Technology Inc. Whereas the experiments demonstrated the existence of the first known neurohormones, the formulation of the concept of neurosecretion was of fundamental importance to further progress, and tribute must be paid to Ernst and Berta Scharrer. The recent proliferation of investigations into insect neurohormones has cre ated the need for an overall review of the data. Our knowledge of the subject is voluminous, and the evidence clearly demonstrates that neurohormones playa part in most insect regulatory processes. This book analyzes and synthesizes the data, starting from neurosecretion (i.e., source sites and release modes of neurohormones) and continuing through the various functions in which neurohormones have been shown to be involved: endocrine gland activity; diapause; reproduction; visceral muscle functioning; color change; behavior; water and ion balance; protein, sugar, and lipid metabo lism; and tanning and other processes occurring at the cuticle level. In each chapter, besides the experimental information, technical procedures as well as recent information concerning purification of the particular neurohor mones and their mode of action are reported. Numerous exhaustive tables allow the reader to get an overview of the matter while the major findings of the mo ment are presented in the conclusion of each chapter. 372 pp. Englisch.

The conference was organized to review the large amount of information gathered in this field over the late seventies as a result of th~ rapid improvements and dissemination of surface spectroscopic technique such a electron energy loss, infrared and Raman surface spectroscopies. Much time was devoted to Raman spectroscopy of adsorbed mo1e 'cu1es. After several years of vivid debate over the causes of the observed large enhancement of Raman cross section, a clearer pic ture emerges from the papers presented here: the actual value of the enhancement factor does depend in a complicated manner on long range surface roughness, atomic-scale roughness and the dielectric properties of the substrate as well as on the electronic structure of the molecule in its adsorbed state. Less controversial are the results obtained with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and several sessions of the con ference were devoted to the approach. As witnessed by the growing number of laboratories using the technique, EELS is now a mature spectroscopic tool for the characterization and analysis of the chemisorption bond. 600 pp. Englisch.

There was agreement in most instances that we are facing some kind of publication explosion, and that the present type of compact and personalized reviews may be of help, from both a conceptual and a purely informational standpoint. The aims of the series were, and still are, to focus attention on the rapidly changing fields within the realm of immunology, and to present in each chapter the summation of results generated by an investigator or group of Investigators, either as an analysis of their own work or as a correlation of such work with the general field in question. The present volume does not differ in its construction from its predecessors, although it does concentrate on a single target, the T lymphocyte and its biology. The selection of subjects as well as contributors has been the sole responsi bility of this editor; however, the actual format and length of the individual contributions was left to the discretion and inspiration of the different authors. Even the styles, ranging from the concise statement to the meticulously detailed review, attest to the freedom of format. 404 pp. Englisch.

The Conference was a sequel to two earlier meetings devoted to the same field of modern physics, that were also held in Rochester in 1960 and in 1966. The scope of the Conference was largely confined to basic pro blems in the general area of optical coherence and quantum optics, and excluded engineering applications that are well covered by other meetings. Approximately 250 scientists from 9 countries participated, most of whom are active workers in the field. Alto gether 72 papers, including 26 invited papers, were presented in 17 sessions. The papers dealt mainly with the subjects of resonant pulse propagation, lasers, quantum electrodynamics and alternative theories, optical coherence, coherence effects in spontaneous emis sion, light scattering, optical correlation and fluctuation measure ments, coherent light interactions and quantum noise. The program was organized by a committee consisting of N. Bloembergen (Harvard University) J. H. Eberly (University of Rochester) E. L. Hahn (University of California at Berkeley) H.
