DEWITT, S.A. THREE PLAYS FOR NON-PURITANS. NY: Strathmore Press, 1951. 8vo., blue cloth with original paper title labels. First Edition. Signed presentation from DeWitt on the front endpaper: "For Bob from Sam DeWitt. March 3, '53." First Edition. The three plays, perhaps unstaged, are "Rhyme Without Reason", a comedy of manners set in the Bohemian days of Greenwich Village, "Where Are the Snows", a play about Francois Villon, and "Shoes for the Stars", about the spirit conquering greed and orneriness. Samuel Aaron DeWitt was a businessman and a member of the NY State Assembly representing Bronx's 7th district from 1919 until 1928. In 1928 he made an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Congress. DeWitt is most famous for being thrown out of the state Assembly, along with four fellow state legislators, for being members of the Socialist Party. The five members brought this case to the U.S. Supreme Court and, subsequently, the New York Assembly was forced to seat three of the five members again, including DeWitt. The other members included August Claessens, Samuel Orr, Charles Solomon, and most famously, Louis Waldman. DeWitt was good friends with author Upton Sinclair. In Sinclair's novel, "The Jungle," one of the main characters, Nicholas Schliemann, is based on Sam DeWitt. Very Good (two tiny scraps front cover label & few light stains; contents clean & tight). $50.00.

Blue Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition / First Printing. Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and scratched, spotting to the front and back covers and the spine, corners are very gently bumped and rubbed, overall a very clean first edition! Blue cloth with a pastedown title on the spine. Extremely rare and out-of-print! 446 very clean, unmarked and uncreased historical pages wonderfully illustrated in black and white! 4 wonderful fold-out maps fully intact. Very very scarce and hard-to-find! "The scope of the present writing has been an attempt to cover every event worth recording in the long history of the Regiment of which the facts could be discovered, and in such a manner that it would give a real picture, not only of the events themselves, but of the times in which they were enacted. This involved a considerable setting of United States history and sketches of contemporary life, which it is believed makes a more lucid narrative for the general reader. The burning of Washington, including the War Department, in 1814, destroyed a large part of the Army records before that date, and there are many periods where even local histories are so vague and general that it is difficult to definitely determine the facts. Where there is doubt or even only strong inference that the regiment participated in an event it is so stated."----from the Preface by F. B. S. Headquarters Second Infantry, Fort Wayne, Michigan, October, 1930. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
