Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. What kind of church will offer access to the Gospel for the next generation? That is the persistent question running through this book. As a minister of the Church of Scotland, the author is committed to a vision of the grace of God for all in our nation, but challenges the assumed strategy for fulfilling that vision as being only through territorial parish ministry. Our fundamental shift is from exclusive territorial mission to cultural and generational mission. A parish church does not mean a parish is churched. We need a mixed economy of neighbourhood and network churches to engage with our nation across the generations. Will we move the resources to match the missionary challenge? Peter Neilson has been a minister of the Church of Scotland for over 30 years, in the parish of Mount Florida, Glasgow and later as Associate Minister in the Parish Church of St Cuthbert, Edinburgh. He has also encouraged the evangelistic mission of the church as an Adviser in Mission and Evangelism, Director of Training at St Ninian's Centre, Crieff, and currently in the role of supporting New Charge Developments within Scotland. He convened the special commission which produced the 'Church without Walls' report in 2001. He is married to Dorothy with two married daughters, one about-to-be-married daughter and a delightful 2 year old granddaughter. "The Chalmers Lectures" which form the basis of this book were graciously hosted in 2004 by St Mary's College, St Andrews, and New College, Edinburgh. They have also been delivered in the International Christian College, Glasgow in 2005. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: New. In the words of Fiona Stafford, who introduces this new collection, 'Here are poems of dedication, exhortation and invitation. Lucky the listener to be finding such company, such sense, such clarity, such joy. This is a man who knows, and what's more, a man who is glad to share. . Readers are likely to feel that they are in the company not of the poet alone, but also his family and many friends.'.

Paperback. Zustand: New. This is an adventurous new collection of poems in which past companions are recalled, and the lives of the occupants of long-ruined farms imaginatively reconstructed, amid a spectacular landscape of hills, moors and cliffs. The fauna and flora of Kintyre's west coast come to life in affectionate detail. The poems - all written in the winters of 2015/16 and 2016/17 - also capture the spiritual values inherent in the silence and strangeness of remote places. They will speak both to local people who know and love such places as The Inneans, Craigaig and Largiebaan, and to those who have appreciated Angus Martin's poetry in the past or who wish to discover it now.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Revised ed. By 1937, many people, both employed and unemployed, were anticipating war, but from 1939 they were all thrust into it. Fred Urquhart's second collection of short stories reflects this. The young men are often reluctant to sign up for the Forces: the world seems on the move. Tenement dwellers react to the mysteries of Blackout, sirens, air-raids, air-raid shelters. Urquhart's stories reflect all this in robust and often comic fashion. The longest, 'The Laundry Girl and the Pole', concerns one of his favourite subjects, the transformation that foreign soldiers could bring to local girls, relatively starved of freedom, in the exciting new Blackout. Wild nights in the chip shop! Language ceases to be the major problem. Sudden brief romances become the risky order of the day. red Urquhart (1912-1995) was born in Edinburgh and spent much of his childhood there, where his grandparents lived, and later he worked in an Edinburgh book shop for some years ('my university'). He is best known as a superb short story writer. When he began to write it was the heyday of short story magazines, and this was the only obvious way to earn a living as an author. He spent the war in the north-east of Scotland, a conscientious objector relegated to farm work: his stories of this are agreed to rival Grassic Gibbon and Jessie Kesson. But later he went to London, finding the louche world of Soho more to his taste than Edinburgh correctness. Later he lived in the country in a 'happy homosexual marriage' and he did not return to Scotland until 1991, after his partner's death. The Ferret Was Abraham's Daughter (1949) and Jezebel's Dust (1951) are his two great novels of Edinburgh's poorer citizens in wartime. sobel Murray is Emeritus Professor in Modern Scottish Literature at the University of Aberdeen. Recent publications include new editions of Naomi Mitchison and Jessie Kesson, and Scottish Novels of the Second World War, which has chapters on them, on Urquhart, and Linklater, Jenkins, Spark, Hood and Mackay Brown, as well as a new edition of her biography, Jessie Kesson: Writing Her Life.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Some of the best of Fred Urquhart's ghost stories are gathered in this volume. They include humorous and satirical tales, depicting an afterlife in which dispirited spirits, although perhaps unionised themselves, are oppressed by what they see as the banal horrors of modernity. Other stories, such as 'The Saracen's Stick' and 'Proud Lady in a Cage', convey a real sense of evil, often rooted in the genuine horrors of the historical past. The title story reflects Urquhart's lifelong interest in the theatre, economically telling the story of the great actress Ellen Terry through the reminiscences of her ghost. Throughout he displays the great skill in characterisation and dialogue that he is noted for, and, as in all his work, his native Scotland is seldom far away.

Paperback. Zustand: New. "The Year of the Short Corn" was first published in 1949, and the war, or its immediate aftermath, forms a presence in most of the stories. It can be a civilian family gathered together with scattered serving children for a precious Christmas leave, or a son or daughter returning from one of the services; it can illustrate clothes rationing, and the avid fervour with which civilian women greet silk stockings; it can be a 'townser' who thinks too much of himself who becomes snowbound on a North East farm, or the rage and humiliation of a young castrated ox. It can even be an Edinburgh boarding-house with a kenspeckle crew of lodgers (and an oversexed bulldog), under the eyes of a bewildered refugee girl from Vienna. Fred Urquhart was praised by George Orwell for the striking variety of his subject matter, and by others for his splendid dialogue, and his portraits of characters, especially women. None of these critics was wrong, but there is more here to praise!

Paperback. Zustand: New. Stewart, George John (illustrator). Graveyards fascinate many folk. Many inscriptions tell abbreviated stories, which a little research can expand. Some offer philosophical advice, but there are also hidden depths of history, biography and sociology. Kilkerran church, Kintyre, Scotland, first appears on record in the mid-thirteenth century. The burial-ground has grown immensely since its expansion, in 1857, beyond the walls of the original churchyard. "Kilkerran Graveyard Revisited" forms a sequel to "An Historical and Genealogical Tour of Kilkerran Graveyard" by the same author and illustrator, published by Kintyre Civic Society in 2006 and still available from the Society. Angus Martin was born in Campbeltown. Editor of "The Kintyre Magazine", this is his twentieth book. Artist George John Stewart traces his Kintyre connections to the 19th Century. He started The Oystercatcher Gallery in Campbeltown in 1989.

Paperback. Zustand: New. In July 1996, Edinburgh College of Art offered a Masterclass with the Italian-Scottish sculptor, Eduardo Paolozzi. He particularly wanted to run this course in his home city. Although born in Leith, the eldest son of Italian immigrants, Paolozzi left Scotland after studying at Edinburgh College of Art to pursue further studies in London and to establish an international reputation as a sculptor. Plans for two previous classes elsewhere had fallen through. The selection process chose 17 students with widely different backgrounds. Plunged into ten days of unconventional tutoring, each found widely differing responses. Paolozzi asked the members of the class to keep a diary of their time with him. Ann Shaw, a former journalist with The Glasgow Herald, documented her days and recorded scenes of chaos and progress. Her unabridged account is illustrated throughout with some of the photographs she took as the appointed 'official' class photographer. Paolozzi is seen as human, vulnerable, gracious and rude, inspiring and shy.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Jessie Kesson is best known for her loosely autobiographical novel The White Bird Passes, first published in 1958. It tells the story of a sensitive child in an Elgin slum, and her later banishment to an Aberdeenshire orphanage. She also published Glitter of Mica, Where the Apple Ripens and Another Time, Another Place, which was made into an award-winning film by Michael Radford. She was a writer of radio plays for the BBC for many years, and Stewart Conn has described her as 'one of the finest of for-radio writers'. She died in 1994, aged 78. Since then, Isobel Murray has edited a selection of her poems, plays and stories, Somewhere Beyond, and written a biography, Jessie Kesson: Writing Her Life. It was published in 2000, and was awarded a prize from the National Library of Scotland, as Research Book of the Year. Kesson and her husband were farm workers in North East Scotland from 1939 to 1951, and this volume contains work from this period, illustrating her abiding love of nature and immersion in the changing seasons. 'I carry climates within me', she said, and 'woods are my territory'.Her writing career was established in 1946 when she was commissioned to contribute twelve monthly articles on 'A Country Dweller's Year' for The Scots Magazine: 'I'm a real writer now'.

Paperback. Zustand: New. When it was first published in 1987, this picture of the lives of country folk from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth completed a trilogy on the history and culture of the author's native Kintyre. The material, from both oral and written sources, tells of everyday lives - working the land, raising livestock, building and furnishing homes, finding fuel and preparing food and celebrating special days. There are also accounts of sheep-stealing, shinty battles, and violent encounters between excise-men and the distillers - and smugglers - of illicit whisky. Illustrated with maps of the peninsula and photographs and reproductions taken or collected by the author.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Sir James Fergusson used to maintain that for anyone lucky enough to live in the Girvan valley the only joy of travel must be the pleasure of coming home. That deep affection, made so plain in the first chapter, written in 1938, was no doubt magnified by five years' absence during the war, and later by his twenty years as Keeper of the Records of Scotland, when he necessarily spent four days and nights of most weeks in Edinburgh. This anthology, mainly culled from Lowland Lairds, "The White Hind" and "The Man Behind Macbeth", brings together those essays which deal more or less directly with the Girvan valley - the parts of it, at any rate, which demanded an historian's attention or awoke his curiosity. It is in no sense a full story of the valley: the principal estates lying on or near the river, like their people, make their appearance simply as the narratives dictate - Trochrague, Penkill, Killochan, Bargany, Dalquharran, Kilkerran, Kirkbride, Blairquhan.'Fugitive pieces' include an Ayrshire wine-merchant's letter book, which, like the study of the plague in 'Ayr', deserves its tenuous place in a book about the valley if only because, to all who lived nearby, wine shipped into the port of 'Ayr' was of as critical interest as the pestilence - at a time when whisky was seldom drunk outside the Highlands and smugglers supplied brandy at overwhelmingly competitive prices. Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran 8th Bart, LLD FRSE, 1904-1973, was Keeper of the Records of Scotland 1949-69, Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, a member of the Royal Commission on Historic Manuscripts, a trustee of the Scottish National Galleries, Chairman of the Burns Monument Trust, and others.

Paperback. Zustand: New. East Lothian is well known as the setting for the notorious "North Berwick" witchcraft outbreak, which is so famous as to have come to dominate all consideration of Scottish witchcraft. This is a pity, as there is much about "North Berwick" which is not typical of Scottish witchcraft, while there is a vast amount of other interesting material which up to now has been virtually ignored. "Wise wives and warlocks" takes a less academic approach than "Goodnight my servants all" (Grimsay Press, 2008)-- which tries to find every reference on record relating to witchcraft and other kindred matters in East Lothian -- and offers a close look at some of the more interesting characters involved. Until recently, the politically correct view of Scottish witchcraft was more or less that it was all nonsense, and that "witches" were poor innocent souls unjustly hounded to a horrible death by tyrannical misogynist religious fanatics. While there is a limited amount of truth in this view, we need not doubt for a moment that there were substantial numbers of people in 17th Century Scotland making a living as healers, charmers, and practitioners of traditional magic. Some of these worthies were not above using their "powers" to cause harm and mischief, and some were seriously unpleasant people habitually extracting money and gifts with threats and menaces. The question of diabolic witchcraft is more problematic. The Devil was originally a foreign import into the world of traditional Scottish magic, and while we cannot absolutely rule out the possibility of "witch clubs" with a "devil" as a sort of master of ceremonies, it seems likely that most of the witchcraft confessions involving the Devil were exercises in telling interrogators what they wanted to hear. We should perhaps make an effort to climb down from our lofty modern superiority, and try to see magic and witchcraft through 17th Century eyes. Our ancestors were not being wilfully stupid or perverse. Magic and witchcraft were realities which pervaded everyday life, and fitted logically into the scheme of things. Many of our cherished 21st Century notions may seem just as bizarre three hundred years into the future.

Paperback. Zustand: New. George Gunn's writing is distinctive, with an urgent sense of people and place. This selection from his previously published poems plus eleven new ones continues to reveal an imagination that, while rooted in a physical and metaphorical Northerly Land, roams widely and forages keenly across a local, national, international, global and ultimately cosmic territory of natural beauty, personal relationships, social injustice and political idiocy. The powerful new work that closes the collection includes poems for Osip Mandelshtam (1891-1938), Alexander Hutchison (1943-2015), Derek Walcott (1930-2017) and the people of Aleppo.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Revised ed. Originally published in 1940, Fred Urquhart's first collection of short stories brings to life the modern Scotland of the 1930s, using his inimitably vivid dialogue. He shows the struggles of working-class women, whether labouring in a sweatshop, facing death in a tuberculosis hospital or seeking escape on a bike of her own. His male characters also have problems, caused by army life, religion or homosexuality in a period of oppression. Life is sometimes overshadowed by the approach of war. But there is comedy too, for example a fraught day at Glasgow's Empire Exhibition of 1938. And Urquhart looks beyond Scotland, with the story of a young American woman and her sailor, a sketch of an Italian soldier in the Spanish Civil War and a comic tale of a film director in Hell. Fred Urquhart (1912-1995) was born in Edinburgh and spent much of his childhood there, where his grandparents lived, and later he worked in an Edinburgh book shop for some years ('my university'). He is best known as a superb short story writer. Having admired Fred Urquhart's work for many years, Colin Affleck, a fellow native of Edinburgh, became a friend of his on his return to Scotland in 1991. Urquhart later appointed him as his literary executor. Among Dr Affleck's writings on Urquhart is a study focussing on his short stories, which appeared in British Short-Fiction Writers, 1945-1980 (edited by Dean Baldwin). Dr Affleck is now working on a biography of Urquhart.

Paperback. Zustand: New. ME is the most common cause of long-term absence from school. A mild case causes regular absences from education, social life and sport, a severe case leaves a young person housebound or bedbound for years. So why is ME surrounded by a lack of understanding, even within the medical professions? During the three years when her teenage son Chris could not go to school, Merryn Fergusson kept a diary - which here becomes the remarkable and candid story of ME as seen through Chris's eyes and through the experiences of his mother, family and friends. The book also traces the history of ME from the 1930s and the emergence of the medical controversy over CFS/ME. It is a controversy which baffles sufferers and their carers, the tragic consequences of which can be the forcible removal of young people from their homes and families.

Paperback. Zustand: New. This is the first volume in a series begun by Isobel Murray and Bob Tait in 1984, and finished in 2008 Authors covered in other volumes include: 2. Iain Banks, Bernard MacLaverty, Naomi Mitchison, Iain Crichton Smith,Alan Spence. 3. Janice Galloway, John Herdman, Robin Jenkins, Joan Lingard, Ali Smith. 4. Jackie Kay, Ian Rankin, Alan Massie, James Robertson, William (Bill) Watson. Extracts from Reviews for Volume 3 Murray is a fine interviewer as well as an incisive critic, academic and biographer. These aren't the kind of interviews that merely gift-wrap the books under discussion; here she's putting whole careers up for lively discussion, and unless she has read every word she wouldn't dream of pressing the tape recorder's "on" button. This is one book it would be impossible to read without wanting to re-read at least half a dozen more straight away. David Robinson, The Scotsman One woman has for several years been circumventing the tired old restrictions and distortions of the formula. Isobel Murray, Honorary Professor in Modern Scottish Literature at Aberdeen University, has been getting writers to talk, at length, on tape .It is an utterly gripping collection.Because the writers are allowed to express themselves without being manipulated or paraphrased, their conversation evolves into real revelation. Murray's consummate skill as an interviewer. She never intrudes, or interrupts, or postures. Her deep knowledge and understanding of literature and writing act as a sort of psychological water diviner, drawing out descriptions and confidences that a less clever interrogator would never bring to the surface. The obvious luminaries of this series may be the writers, but the pole star is Murray. Most other interviewers are mere astral dust by comparison. Rosemary Goring, The Herald Simply indispensable. Hugh MacDonald, The Herald.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Did you know that a former Ayr United great was the first Briton to be a football manager in Argentina? Did you know that he wasn't the only Ayr United manager to have been contracted to a South American club? Did you know that a former Ayr United manager gave first team debuts to such luminaries as Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott? There are facts aplenty but the overall purpose of this compilation is the study of the managerial evolution at Somerset Park. It seems inconceivable that Ayr United managers used to have no input in team selection, or that a modern day incumbent would have clerical work almost at the top of the list of their priorities. These practices were down to nothing more than it being consistent with the protocol of the time. Nowadays, the manager is either revered or vilified according to whether it is a halcyon period or a time of struggle. It was not always so. From the viewpoint of the present day, the reader gets chance to chart the changes. Sometimes the efforts of past managers were in vain. Sometimes it came to glorious fruition. Either way it is all documented within these pages.

Paperback. Zustand: New. The Thirteenth Member, first published in 1971, could be considered a 'cross-over' novel between the historical and fantasy genres. The subject matter is witchcraft and witch-hunts, which continued in Scotland far beyond the rest of Britain, with the last prosecution in Scotland in 1727. Mollie Hunter's work includes contemporary fiction for children and young adults, historical fiction and fantasy. Many critics regard her writing in the fantasy genre as her strongest and most influential. With its roots in recorded historical events and with the subject matter relating to the supernatural - again a major pre-occupation of Scottish Literature in general - the novel acts as a bridging text between these two major genres in the Scottish corpus. Moreover, it is one of the strongest and most unified of all Hunter's works in that it works well at both the realistic and symbolic levels, while still managing to incorporate themes of witchcraft, the supernatural, political intrigue, dishonesty, entrapment and love. This reprint includes an Afterword by Maureen Farrell.

Paperback. Zustand: New. His Waverley novels brought Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) great international fame in his own day. Many modern readers, however, find them too daunting, perhaps because of their considerable length. The aim of this volume is to introduce the general reader to Scott's prose fiction through his highly accessible short stories. These include the "straightforward" horror stories My Aunt Margaret's Mirror and The Tapestried Chamber and the masterly Wandering Willie's Tale with its weird expedition to Hell, told in broad Scots. The Highland Widow and The Two Drovers mirror the themes of some of Scott's great novels. The former deals with friction and misunderstanding between generations in a Highland family - with fatal consequences. The latter examines ideas of justice and honour when Highlander and Englishman collide - again with fatal consequences. Also included are The Fortunes of Martin Waldeck and Death of the Laird's Jock. With an Introduction by Ronald W. Renton and an Essay by David Cecil.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Ian Campbell, who has had access to a very large number of the relevant papers, has divided Carlyle's life into two definite parts-the Scottish years and the Chelsea years-and by mixing biography and literary criticism, has produced a full portrait of the man and his works. He traces Carlyle's development from the early years in Ecclefechan and then Edinburgh during its golden age of artistic and literary achievement, through his marriage to Jane and the writing of Sartor Resartus, to the year 1834 when they settled in London. The Chelsea years saw the emergence of Carlyle's massive works on the French Revolution, Cromwell and Frederick the Great, the publication of each involving a crisis in the Carlyles' strange domestic life. 1866 marked a high point, when he returned to Scotland in triumph as Lord Rector of Edinburgh University. Everything subsequent was tragic: Jane's death, the drying-up of the historical muse, the withdrawal from public life. Yet, this was the period of private friendships with the most meteoric literary figures in an amazing age.Thomas Carlyle died in 1881, at the age of eighty-six, renowned as a historian and known throughout the intellectual world as 'the Sage of Chelsea'. Ian Campbell was born in Lausanne and educated there and in Scottish schools, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities. He retired in 2009 as Professor of Scottish and Victorian Literature at Edinburgh where he had spent his teaching life, with spells in Canada, USA, Japan and Europe. As one of the senior editors of the Duke-Edinburgh edition of the Carlyle Letters he has written much on both Carlyles, on Scottish literature of every genre since Burns, and on Victorian literature generally. He is President of the Carlyle Society, and remains an Emeritus Professor at Edinburgh. "Thomas Carlyle" is a revised and updated edition of the biography originally published in London in 1974 by Hamish Hamilton, and republished in 1993 by the Saltire Society in Edinburgh.

Paperback. Zustand: New. While reflecting the style and character of its predecessor, 'A Summer in Kintyre', this new book is rich in differences. The narrative begins in April 2014 and ends in September, but real time is irrelevant, as the author dips frequently into history and prehistory, evoking people and events associated with the places he visits by bicycle and on foot. Artists, poets, musicians, cave-dwellers, convicts, winkle-pickers, travelling tinsmiths, shipwrecked sailors, saints, school friends, fishermen, shepherds, farmers and fellow-ramblers share the pages with flowers, butterflies, birds, otters, whales, adders, and much else. A close engagement with places, people and nature is ever-present and, using the journals he has kept since his teens, the author is able to recreate his early adventures in the outdoors. Besides familiar haunts in South Kintyre (Learside, Ben Gullion, Inneans, and Largiebaan), he visits Barr Glen, Ballochroy Glen and Lussa, and explores their history. Illustrated with 50 images, the result will inform and delight any reader with an interest in one of Scotland's most fascinating yet least appreciated areas.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Fred Urquhart's lively collection of stories deals with life in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and demonstrates his fascination with American culture and its effect on Britain. The title story - a highly amusing satirical novella - presents a young Scotswoman who is desperate to cross the Atlantic as a war bride in order to get to Hollywood, armed with a tartan skirt and a copy of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Other stories portray an eccentric woman who has watched too many films, an American musician who has been luckless in his marriages, and an Edinburgh office where the typists have to cope with a predator. Urquhart takes us to London with a tale of an Aberdeenshire farmer's wife in search of fancy shoes and to occupied Germany, where a horse-loving soldier acquires a wife. In the final piece, two sophisticated women from London find life in the country too much for them. Throughout, Urquhart employs his sharp wit and his unique way with dialogue, creating a gallery of memorable characters.
