First American edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xxx, 420; xvi, 408, [2]; 30 wood-engraved plates (4 folding), 3 colored maps (2 folding), and numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text; original pictorial gray cloth stamped in brown and gilt; spines a touch soiled, otherwise a very good, sound copy. Colquhoun (1848-1914), Scottish official and explorer, was born at sea. "He arrived in Canton in 1882, and, accompanied by Charles Wahab (an officer in the Madras army) made the long ascent of the West River . near the border of Yunnan. From here the two travellers continued in a general westerly direction to Sze-mao . that as early as the 1860s had been suggested as a terminus for a railway from Burma. Prevented from travelling directly into Burma, the travellers were forced to turn north to Tali, an administrative centre on the lake Er Hai, to the northwest of modern Dali (formerly Xiaguan), and from here to make their way by the established route to Bhamo on the Irrawaddy. This important journey passed through regions previously unexplored and unmapped by Europeans and immediately established Colquhoun's reputation as an explorer, so much so that he was invited by Henry Morton Stanley to act as second-in-command of Stanley's expedition to the Congo" (Howgego).
