2 volumes. Volume 1 has 278 pages. Volume 2 has 296 pages. Volume 1 has 32 page introduction on the people and the language with some emphasis of the Basque dialect in Mexico (Mey-he-co). Bound in 19th century half-calf with marbled paper boards, gilt morocco labels on spine. The leather is a little rubbed as are the paper boards, contents including endpaper all original. a light splash stain to a number of pages in volume 1 mainly at the beginning and end at outside corner, not affecting text and quite light, not really detracting. The introduction has the start at page 34, it does not go back to start at page 1 although the into is numbered in Latin numerals. A scarce 1st edition set. *The authors first work of fiction. He began writing plays in 1827 including "The Gladiator" which has features used in both Spartacus of 1960 and Gladiator the film with Russell Crowe. He has mainly used the history of Mexico in this story to spin a tale of 16th century & Cortez. A romance which has he states in the intro "always outsells a history, as any publisher will tell you". In the 19th century he was deemed one of the fathers of American literature and this was his FIRST book of only about 4 and a number of very successful plays.
