Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Second Impression. Hard Cover. 12mo. 64pp. Condition: Very Good with some foxing to pages and dust-soiling to covers. ** Essay on the art of collecting and the reading of books, by the Scottish minister, John Watson (1850-1907), who went by the pen-name of Ian MacLaren. He is perhaps best known for his "Kailyard" short story collection "Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush" (1894). Kailyard refers to a kitchen garden, and his stories tell of rural life in Scotland. The Kailyard books were later seen as being a pastiche of real life, but they started a tradition which led the trilogy "A Scots Quair" (1932-1934) by Lewis Grassic Gibbon (1901-1935). Both authors make use of the Scots language and descriptions of farm life in lowland Scotland. A more contemporary author who takes this further is David D. Ogston in his book "White Stone Country: Growing Up in Buchan" (1986). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8390

VG sand buckram, spine darkened. Beige sides. Leather title-piece. 63, [1] p.; front. (port.); 17 cm. Signature: Ian Maclaren in gold on front cover. Prior owner's inscr. on ffep `The parallel between dipsomania and bibliomania is very close and suggestive. It is the wife who in both cases is usually the sufferer and good angel.' (p. 51) `.it is the triumphant cunning with which the bookman will smuggle a suspicious brown paper parcel into his study at an hour when his wife is out, or the effrontery with which he will declare when caught, that the books have been sent unbeknown to him, and supposes merely for his examination. For, like drink, this fearsome disease eats into the very fibre of character, so that its victim will practise tricks to obtain books in advance of a rival collector, and will tell the most mendacious stories about what he paid for them. Should he desire a book, and it be not a king's ransom, there is no sacrifice he will not make to obtain it. His modest glass of Burgundy he will cheerfully surrender, and if he ever travelled by any higher class, which is not likely, he will now go third, and his topcoat he will make to last another year, and I do not say he will not smoke, but a cigar will now leave him unmoved. Yes, and if he gets a chance to do an extra piece of writing, between 12 and 2 A.M., he will clutch at the opportunity, and all that he saves, he will calculate shilling by shilling, and the book he purchases with the complete price--that is the price to which he has brought down the seller after two days' negotiations--anxious yet joyful days--will be all the dearer to him for his self-denial.' (p. 54-56). Illustrated by photograph by. 2nd impression edition. Binding is Hardcover. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 014947
