Half-title and frontispiece lacking, facsimile copies tipped-in. Bookseller's ticket on rear endpaper "Vernon Howard - Mountaineering Books - California, USA". Some foxing.; Variant state with only 44 rather than 45 illustrations listed in the printed list of "Illustrations" on pages (xv-xvi). The omitted illustration is the portion of a Tibetan Praying Wheel, which in the other variant is illustration number 11 of 45. The present state of the "Illustrations" leaf has illustration 11 as "Seventh Bridge, Sirinugger" (this illustration is number 12 in the other state), and renumbers the remaining illustrations up to the final number 44. Original dark purple-brown pebble grain cloth boards, with gilt stupa illustration on spine, gilt circular illustration with Tibetan letters on front board. Page dimensions: 222 x 140mm.
