Beschreibung
With sketches by Capt. S. Eastman of the U.S. Topographical Corps, who drew them during the nine years he was stationed among the Indian tribes in and around Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Most of the text is by his wife Mary Eastman with a contribution by Fredrika Bremer. The 12 full-page chromolithographic plates are remarkable. They were printed by Peter S. Duval of Philadelphia and the editor proudly announced that each print was printed in ten colors, overprinting some to produce varied effects. The illustrations include the Falls of St. Anthony; We-Har-Ka (chief); Wenona's Leap (Lake Pepin, Mississippi River); Sounding Wind; Indian Marriage Custom; Mission Chapel of San Jose (San Antonio Texas); Landing of William Penn and other beautiful chromolithographic plates. Lg 8vo, 298pp, all edges gilt. Red embossed cloth covers with gilt decoration, 12 full-page chromolithographic plates. This volume was bound in full red leather, spine lacking with damage to edges. All edges gilt, some light fox spotting o/w good plus condition in need of a reback. Plates in very good condition. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 27056
