Rochester, Humpy Press, 1972. Small square octavo, [vi], 62 pages with 28 illustrations (from photographs by the author). Colour-pictorial card covers slightly rubbed; an excellent copy. An unusual little book that defies easy categorisation. On one hand, it is a Jewish recipe book containing just three recipes: a chicken broth, 'kreplach' (dumplings), and matzo balls. It is also a photobook, featuring a matronly chef demonstrating the cooking steps, topless. Only later does the reader discover that the chef/model is none other than the photographer's mother! The last page in the book reprints a letter from 'Mom', dated 5 May 1970: 'Dear Leslie, I was making chicken soup today, and making it reminded me that last time I saw you, you didn't look so hot. If your wife would learn to make chicken soup like mine, things would be different. I know you're a famous photographer now . but remember, you'll never be too famous to eat chicken soup'.
