An uncommonly well preserved copy of this scarce title. A little rubbing and staining to the cloth. Joints and hinges strong. A few spots of foxing. No signatures. ; A very early volume of New Zealand poetry. [xii], 254, [1] pages. Orange-brown blind-stamped cloth boards. Page dimensions: 170 x 104mm. "The author of the following Poems, a native of Paisley, emigrated to the thriving colony of Otago, New Zealand, in the year 1852. For some years previously he had been at the head of one of the first engineering establishments in Scotland. Misfortunes, however, overtook him, as they have done many a better man. [. . .] On his arrival at Otago he found it no easy matter to hew out a new home for his wife and children, but still he persevered, determined not to be beat, and ultimately succeeded in establishing himself in a comfortable and independent position, with 'Bread and cheese at his door cheeks, / And pancakes the rigging o't.' With regard to the pieces comprised in this little volume, many of them were composed when the Author was busily emplyed upon his ground, clearing with his axe, and many a long and sad thought did they help to beguile, both by night and by day; the writing of them out being, for a considerably time, his greatest recreation after his day's labour." - from the Preface.
