pp. xxiv, 492, [8 ? index & booklist] 6 plates (some folding). Original full calf, gilt decoration on spine (which shows some rubbing, and wear to foot of spine and upper left corner). Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) was a physician and botanist, who on inheriting his father's estate, turned it into a model farm, experimenting in horticulture, agriculture and forestry. He was a pioneering experimentalist in plant physiology, nutrition and pathology. After a trip to England, Duhamel published, in 1750, a Traite de la Culture des Terres according to the principles of Jethro Tull, through which he introduced English agricultural technological innovations. He published a new edition, considerably increased, in six volumes between 1753 and 1761 and the Elements d'Agriculture, in 1762, which was an introduction ot the rudiments of agriculture, encompassing his thoughts and the new ideas coming particularly from England. This translation by John Gill from "Traite de la Culture des Terres," is in 4 parts on agriculture in general, experiments in new husbandry, cropping, and agricultural instruments.
