254 pages with a 13 page index. Printed on laid paper with uncut edges, red embossed cloth with gilt titles. Some minor spotting to endpapers and a very faint fade line top edge of front board (hardly noticed). Octavo. 1919. * Author was a Dickens authority and president of the Dickens Fellowship between 1915-1919 and this was written as a legacy to the writer and his characters in his novels in the aftermath of the great war and it's effects on our psyche at that time. And his attempt to use Dickens to infuse the lost patriotism in the country. Reflecting upon Dickens' legacy he writes ".If we appraise that influence correctly, we shall, I believe, have captured all that is best, all that is most virile and arresting in England today and we shall have looked upon our faults and our radiant possibilities .
