16th century copper plate engraving; "Esther Before Ahasuerus". Copper engraving dated 1518. 1st or 2nd state of 3 known with the light cross hatching to base area within the plate and mis-aligned plate mark, lower left corner (crucial issue points). With reasonable margins on all 4 sides on laid hand made cream paper no watermark noticed. A very clean and unstained or damaged example of this Beautiful print dating to 1518-20. NOTE* Lucas van Leyden (1494 ? 8 August 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, was a Dutch engraver and painter. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and is generally regarded as a very accomplished engraver. Albrecht Durer did an engraved portrait of him in 1521. ***An example of this engraving is held in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and other examples of his paintings and prints hand in national galleries all over Europe and North America.
