10 copper engraved plates Nos 1-10 of the series, the first plate is browned with age due to having lived on the top of the others, it also has some light creases at the left with ingrained dirt, but would clean. The final plate has some edge chips and is also browner than the other 8, a small old ink spot to lower right of plate 1, the plates themselves are in the main very good+ and the two described are clear and good. The paper is laid and railed Whatman wove paper but no watermark as called for, the final two plates Nos 11 + 12 are from the later 1790 strikes published by Boydell and purchased from Hogarth's wife Jane. These last two are on hand-made wove cartridge paper, no rail marks. The margins are wider on these last two also, but dimensions identical. They are also a cleaner pair. Measurements are approx 10.5 x 14 inches to plate line and 12 x 16 inches edge to edge. The last two are slightly wider all round. (12). 10 are 1747 and 2 later 1790. *NOTES: The story in sequence of Tom Idle and Francis Goodchild making their lives through the title wording, sloth and work ethic. One become mayor and the other becomes a victim of Tyburn and all it's horrors of public execution. RARE today to get all 12 even though two are a little later, they are of course the plates engraved by Hogarth himself. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8315
