Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. London. Weidenfeld and Nicholson. 1982. First Edition. Hard Cover. Red boards with gilt spine titles. Clean unmarked contents. Examines the lives of four Russian poets, Osip Mandelstam, Boris Pasternak, Maria Tsvetayeva and Anna Akhmatova whose creativity straddled the Bolshevik Revolution. All suffered persecution under the regime and also 'Nightingale Fever' a term coined by Mandelstam to describe the 'disease' of being a poet; the inability to stop singing regardless of the consequences. This has often proved fatal in Russian literary history. Due to the closeness of the four, it is natural to treat them as a unit in this critical biography. Hingley charts the violent clashes with the state authorities provoked by his subject's commitment to their art. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers MAY18.22012
