Críticas:
«Plato's dialogues cannot but suggest to readers today a practice of philosophy whose goal is more therapeutic than systematic. Dr. Moes explores the metaphor of therapy in relation to medical practice, to show how Plato conceived and executed these dialogues to promote the care of our souls.» (David Burrell, C.S.C., Theodore M. Hesburgh, Professor in Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame)
«This book is an important contribution to the ongoing discussion of why Plato wrote in dialogue form. The view developed and defended by Dr. Moes is that the dialogues address dysfunctional aspects of the social life of contemporary Athens, both communal and individual, with the aim of ferreting out and counteracting the roots of these disorders. While Dr. Moes focuses primarily on the 'Symposium' and the 'Philebus', he shows that this 'therapeutic model' applies to several other dialogues as well. The book is exceptionally well-written, and its scholarship both thorough and penetrating. No one who reads Plato seriously should remain unacquainted with this provocative work.» (K. Sayre, Philosophy Department, University of Notre Dame)
Reseña del editor:
Plato's Dialogue Form and the Care of the Soul discusses how to read a Platonic dialogue and includes detailed readings of the Symposium and the Philebus. In light of recent nondogmatic and dramatic readings of Plato's work, it argues that the dialogues depict Socrates and the other masters as practicing philosophy by extending and reinterpreting Greek medicine in a peculiar quasi-psychiatric way. This book contends that many of the dialogues are depictions of conversations between philosophers and nonphilosophers, conversations which are importantly similar to interactions between physicians and patients in Greek medical practice. The book contends that these conversations include both diagnostic and therapeutic moments, and function as quasi-psychiatric case histories presented by Plato to his readers.
