The book offered here His book features electrolysis treatment of many blemishes including: "port-wine marks, pigmentary naevi, fibromata (small, benigh tumours of fibrous tissue), naevus verrucosus and warts, naevus vasculosus simplex, angioma cavernosum, telangiectasis (thread veins), naevus araneous (spider nevus) and even xanthoma palpebera (small yellowy lumps common around the eyes). This is an early work on the various uses of electrolysis.

The present collection reflects the state of Kipling's India during the high summer of the Raj. At the end of 1884 Lord Dufferin replaced the Earl of Ripon as Viceroy, and apart from a period of seven months between June of 1885 and January of 1886, when Lord Salisbury and the Conservatives were in power following the death of G…eneral Gordon, and Lord Randolph Churchill was Secretary of State, Gladstone and the Liberals were in power. All the items in the present collection are scarce: disregarding electronic reproduction, the only copies on JISC LHD appear to be held by the deposit libraries and UCL. Each item was printed separately, and it would appear from similar cases that the title and contents leaves were specially produced for this collection and a few others, such as that of the Bodleian. Fourteen discrete items (as evidenced by different gradations of fading) in a sturdy rebinding, in buff-coloured buckram, with reinforced hinges, and the original plum leather labels gilt laid down on the spine: 'ACCOUNTS AND PAPERS / 12' and 'VOL 49'. A total number of 782 folio pages, according to a nineteenth-century manuscript pagination. Binding and contents in good condition, although the paper of the items is discoloured and somewhat brittle, with a few closed tears here and there. Two leaves have been specially printed for the collection: one with the title and another with two pages of contents. The title reads: 'Accounts and papers: thirty-nine volumes. / - (12.) - / East India. / Session 1. - 12 January 1886 -- 25 June 1886. / Session 2. -- 5 August 1886 - 25 September 1886. / Vol. XLIX. / 1886.' In manuscript on reverse of title: 'This Book is to be preserved in the Libraries of the Home Office 1886'. 'WITHDRAWN' stamp at foot of same page. All but items 3, 10 and 12 have details printed in characteristic fashion at right angles on the reverse of the final leaf. The contents arranges the items under the following headings: Accounts (1); Home Accounts (2), Financial Statement, 1886-87 (3), Income Tax Act (4), Loans raised in England (5 and 6), Loans raised in India (7 and 8), Railways (9), East India (Progress and Condition) (10), Revenue and Expenditure (11), Silver Question (Great Britain and India) (12), Transfer of Government to Simla (13), Statement of Trade (14). The double portrait of Prospect Park is the epitome of a so-called pictorial view, that is the representation of an idealized scenery according to the taxonomy of Elen Deming (2000). It obeys the compositional techniques of European landscape painting in the wake of Claude…and Poussin, differentiating between the fore-, middle- and background as well as adapting a relatively low viewpoint. All of these elements can be found in Fritz Meyer's atmospheric rendering of New York's Prospect Park. With its juxtaposition of landscaped elements and the city skyline in the far distance it conjures not so much a contrast between these primordial states than the idea of urban utopia - fashioned in the second half of the 19th century. Nature and civilisation were thought not to be mutually exclusive. As for the identity of Fritz Meyer, little is known. His name and some surviving drawings suggest that he was a German immigrant and Peters (1931) only reports that he "drew many portraits for Dumke & Keil." The impetus to build Prospect Park came from the New York State Legislature in 1859 when it empowered a commission to designate potential sites for parks in Brooklyn, considered the first commuter neighborhood in the world. It should be remembered that construction on Central Park only began in the 1850s and similarly Prospect Park - at the creation date of the present prints - was only in the making. The first section of the Park opened to the public in 1867. One is thus tempted to see in Meyer's double view an anticipation of Vaux and Olmstead's vision. Its rural character blends with broad, yet unpaved, roads. What is more, the scarce hints at architectural elements in the East view helps to tentatively identify the artist's location as Mount Prospect - the second highest point in Brooklyn drawing its name from that very same sweeping vistas. The City of Brooklyn built a reservoir at its peak in 1856. Prospect Park was a highly unusual subject for 19th century prints. A true rarity, there are no sales of "Prospect Park" recorded by the Rare Book Hub database. Similarly, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library only have the "View From the Reservoir Looking West" in their collection. Its companion piece does not appear to be documented in the collections of New York institutions. Lit. Perthes, 1885) as it stated on the first p…age. The brochure contains nine chapters. Every leaf is numbered starting from the first chapter (44 numbered pages). With introduction to the first and the second editions. This manuscript book was created by Russian underground Marxists as they tried to spread their ideas. This kind of books were banned in the country at the time and a person cought distributing them would had faced arrest. This is an interesting historical evidence of the most revolutionary time in Russian history. The Quintessence of Socialism by a German economist Albert Schäffle (1831-1903) was mostly interpreted as an unbiased presentation of socialism but outside of Germany it was used as a basic introduction to socialism. It was a strictly scientific yet popular and easy to understand account of socialism. Among other things the author analyzes socialist idea of the public organization of production and the role of collective property in the process of production and sharing. It's not surprising that the book attracted a lot of attention of Social Democrats because Schäffle based a lot of his brief exposition of socialist economics on the theories of Marx. He concentrated solely upon economic theory and inadvertently emasculated Marxism of its political and truly revolutionary implications. Marx responded negatively to Schäffle's work claiming he had never built a socialist system in his works and called Schäffle's views on socialism fantasies but these fantasies became very popular among certain groups of revolutionaries including Narodnaya Volya in Russia. Schäffle's book was widely read by interested Social Democrats cannot be doubted, for it was admirably brief, clearly written, and easily available. Obviuosly the Social Democrats could not accept Schäffle without some modifications. Nevertheless, some of them imbibed a sufficient dosage to set up a tension within the movement between the traditional democratic-political principles and what they took to be their socialist-economic principles as defined by Schäffle. For example, a member of Land and Liberty group (Zemlya i Volya) Osip Aptekman wrote in his memoirs: ''[.] Marx's Zur Kritik and The Quintessence of Socialism by Schäffle were going the rounds. Plekhanov importuned me to scrutinize these two books. I constantly read it outloud and translated while Plekhanov was catching it on the fly and capturing it in his memory'' (Aptekman, O. Obshchestvo Zemlya i Volya of 1870s). First Russian translation was published in Geneva in 1881 (from the 7th German edition). In 1906 were published first Russian editions in Odessa and St. Petersburg.

Twelve images with period pencil captions or dates on verso. Photos slightly waved and faded, one with a minor crease on the corner, one photogravure with a small repaired tear; overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Interesting collection of thirteen early, well-preserved original albumen studio photos of Gibraltar and Spain in the late 19th century. Five views of Gibraltar include three images of the Rock (east side looking north with British barracks in the centre, Signal Hill battery, the summit taken from the sea), Europa Point battery and the Eastern enclosure of the Moorish Castle. Four views of Cadiz, with the credentials of Jose E. Puig, show Plaza de San Juan de Dios, Plaza de Toros, Plaza de Abastos (Central Market), and a general view of the city from Torre Tavira looking towards the sea. An interesting image with the ink stamp of Rafael Rocafull y Monfort on the verso shows a public park in the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa Maria. An unsigned photo is an attractive view of "strada principale di Porto S. Maria (Cadice)." There is also a view of a port with several boats in a dock, piles of logs and local workers, most likely, in Spain. The smallest photo portrays a young Spanish torero (bullfighter) wearing a traditional traje de luces outfit and a montera hat. The collection also includes nine photogravures (six by Madrid studio of Oscar Hauser Muller and Adolfo Menet Kurstiner), showing Barcelona (Paceo de Colon, La Rambla, Columbus Monument, fountain in the Parc de la Ciutadella, general view of the port), port city of Vigo (Calle del Principe, general views of the harbour and waterfront, featuring ships of the "squadron d'istruzione italiano") and Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia.
