Het jaar daarop zouden zij ook zijn verhandelingen publiceren. In deze bundel staat de treurzang 'Aan mijne landgenooten', geschreven in 1810 na de gedeeltelijke en kort voor de algehele inlijving van Nederland bij Frankrijk, waarmee hij destijds grote indruk maakte. In 1830 kwam Simons in aanvaring met de Leidse bibliothecaris Jacob Geel, naar aanleiding van diens voorlezing in het Leesmuseum te Utrecht over 'Het Proza'. Simons zag het als een aanval op de (en op zijn) poëzie en hield korte tijd later op dezelfde plaats een voorlezing 'Over de Poëzy', waarin hij Geel de les las. De verhandelingen werden - zonder dat de auteurs daarvan op de hoogte waren - gezamenlijk uitgegeven. Toen Simons na lezing bleek dat hij Geel verkeerd had begrepen, volgde een verzoening tussen de twee professoren.
