After the February Revolution of 1848, Louis-Philippe and his family fled to England, as did the binder, Antoine Chatelin (c. 1820-1890) who established an atelier in London producing work for French aristocratic political exiles. The Duc de Chartres (1840-1910) fought on the side of the Union in the American Civil War. In the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, serving under the pseudonym Robert Le Fort, he served with such distinction that he was awarded the Legion d'honneur. 'Aelian is one of the most renowned and trustworthy of the ancient miliary writers' [Cockle, page 71]. His handbook describes Greek (i.e. Macedonian) tactics and drill as practiced by the Hellenistic successors of Alxander the Great.
