FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS OF THESE RARE PRE-CIVIL WAR GEORGIA IMPRINTS. Vol. I was published in New York but Vol. II was published in Savannah, Vols. 3-20 in Athens GA and Vols. 21-24 in Columbus… GA. The set is bound in matching leather but some bindings are damaged. Each volume has a law library name stamped on the covers; the front boards of Vols. I and VI are detached; the spines of Vols. I, IX, and XX are torn; most volumes have a strip of brown cloth tape across the top of the spine. ATTENTION: many bindings are fragile so one can expect other covers to detach. Other than some very minor foxing scattered throughout the set, the interior pages are clean, tight, and unmarked. Offered as-is and no returns accepted. Buyer should understand they may need to rebind these books. These reports on various law cases were standard volumes in Georgia courts but the vast majority were destroyed during the Civil War, As with other works from this era, antebellum printings from Georgia are today rarely found.

The autographs contained within include 262 United States Senators and Congressmen. The majority of the autographs do not have accompanying dates,…however one signer dated their entry 1843 and another dated their entry 1850. This album provides a quintessential glimpse into Antebellum Period US politics. It is clear to see, from the signatures and accompanying notation of the state from which each signer hails (some also note their home towns) , that the American legislature is still fully functional at this point. The album is easy to navigate as the owner has had all the Senators sign at the beginning of the album and then left a few blank pages before having Congressmen sign in the later pages of the album. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good plus. A pair of letters from C. H. Berry of Corning, New York, who was apparently both a schoolteacher and active in Free Soil circles in the area. The earlier letter, written in 1847, provides an unexpected look at corporal punishment in the classroom. Berry writes: "I am in my school yet. I have four weeks,…or nearly that to keep yet. I storm round like an old sailor, have my hands full, but enjoy the pleasure of seeing the little 'varmints' learn. I had a speck of variety today. Several boys stayed out this forenoon after recess. This afternoon I called them up, & after talking a spell, told them I should punish them for staying out. One fellow squared himself & said he should not be punished! He was a huge fellow, with a boxer's ring on his fingers, weighing one or two ounces. He swore flat in my face when I began to talk with him. I told him, in consideration of his being saucy, he must take off his coat. I took the young man by the collar with one hand and applied a strap of harness leather to his legs with the other. He flourished his tongue, his arms & legs in a furious way, till finding my own was too long for him to reach me, he dove for the poker. I just laid him out a couple of times & then plied my straps till his coat came off with a rush & numerous apologies followed it. He said he swore because he was mad, he always did so, & thought it very unfortunate that he had such a habit. I then punished him for staying out and told him to take his seat, which he did very quietly." The second letter, written during the immediate aftermath of the election of 1848, shifts dramatically toward national politics. Berry offers a frank assessment of the political future of anti-slavery organization: "In 'Free Soil' matters, we have done up all we expected to here and are perfectly satisfied. Our party is firmly organized. Our cause has the sympathy of honest men of all parties, and as Taylor is elected, let me tell you just what I think of it: Cass has showed his hand, and that party can not claim to be free soil men in 1852, or at any time hereafter. Taylor is in a position where he will be obliged to declare himself also. Now if Taylor disappoints the South and comes out a freedom man, it will be in consequence of this Northern movement, and we have attained all we wanted. But if (which is more likely) he goes for the South, his supporters in the free states will be without the least color of excuse in 1852, and they must join our party, & there will not be a grease spot of their organization left. The case, then is this: Nothing but 'liberty' will satisfy the people of the north. The Hunkers can not stand on this platform, for they have repudiated it; the honest ones will be with us. The Whigs must come on to our ground and join us as a party, by the acts of their Executive, or declare against liberty, which will destroy their party here and bring them to us in a disorganized mass. Then with 'repeal' as our motto, we will teach them the error of their ways. We can not fail to succeed in my view of the case. Free soil forever." Written before the formation of the Republican Party and more than a decade before secession, the letter captures anti-slavery political sentiment at a transitional moment when Free Soil activists believed sectional political realignment increasingly inevitable. A collection of sixteen letters written to John Hall Watson (18201901) from various family and friends shortly after Watson's departure for Europe in March or April of 1851. Correspondents are his brother, Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Watson (18261905); family friends John H. Kimball (??) and Joshua Fost…er Burgess (18271908); and his wife Elizabeth Merrill Watson (18291859). Frank Watson's letters, which total ten pages, highlight the group. Watson was a prominent attorney in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was appointed the town's Postmaster, elected City Solicitor, published the Democratic newspaper The Lawrence Sentinel, and was present as a Major in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment[1]the first unit in the Union Army to suffer casualties, when they were fired upon by civilians during the 1861 Baltimore riot. At this time, however, the younger Watson had not yet attained this level of success. Instead, he was a trial lawyer working under Daniel Saunders, Jr.son of one of Lawrence's founders, and later the city's mayorabout whom Watson has numerous complaints: "I hardly know what to say to you about my business and prospects I must confess that it seems to me that even if I remain in the law I had full as well separate from Saunders as to keep with him. He is selfish and grasping and has a powerful notion of his own importance and superiority which is decidedly more apparent to him than to any more distant observer. [.] I could put up with these things if I was getting a living from this business. It is clear that I am not there is nominally from 10 to 1500$ coming to me this year but I shall not see $500 of it between this and next January. Daniel is in want of all the money he can get his hands hold of and he takes it without rendering any account therefore on the books and I trust luck to find it out. This is not done for the purpose of [?] cheating me I presume but I have no doubt that it is intentionally done for the purpose of useing the amount without my knowledge so that I may consider myself bound to share everything I receive in. [.] I am not going to be bamboozled by the Saunders tribe any longer I am going to have my rights strictly, fully and as though they truly belonged to me or I am going to take a stand which will compel him to buy me out or remain in a very uncomfortable situation. [.] In the first place I am to devote every instant of time between 8 Oclock in the morning until 9 Oclock at night to the office business or else the office will have to be closed as I am of course the only one responsible in the concern." (May 11) Watson also provides his brother with much detail about the cases he was currently tryingnoting that "Daniel has only tried one case and got beat at that", while he "had 13 deposed of and only two have been decided" against him (April 26)including a fraud case in which: "the judge once or twice tried to resist me but let me go to the jury on my persisting on a right to do so, he then instead of charging argued for an hour and quarter against me, telling the jury in some many words that there were no evidence of fraud the jury went out at 2 ½ Oclock and came in at 10 ½ next morning with a verdict for me much to the chagrin of His Honor and much to the disappointment of the [opposing counsel] Wrights who offered to bet 50$ that they would get a verdict after the jury had gone out [.] The whole bar were tremendously tickled to see the jury go against the judge so. [.] The judge has been as good as honey to me ever since." Barnard first traveled from Boston to Charleston, South Carolina, by boat, from which he notes "almost a continual gagging an…d vomiting" from the passengers. In Charleston, Barnard observes that the city is inelegant, the unpaved streets "filled with mud", and views "the breastworks which were thrown up during the last war". This would have been the War of 1812, of which Barnard was likely a veteran. South Carolina had engaged upwards of 5,000 soldiers and had put up defenses along the coastline in anticipation of the war, but it did not come to the mainland although South Carolina was under naval blockade, and the Sea Islands were targeted by the British. Barnard reaches Savannah, Georgia, on the 25th of December; similarly, he finds it "although a place of considerable business", "about as dissatisfactory a place I ever was in." Augusta, which he reaches by foot, "is much handsomer built and situated than Savannah but not less dissipated" he remarks that "Being the first day of the year is in this part of the country another great day for getting drunk." After spending some time in Augusta, he finishes the letter with some pointed observations about its residents: "I have had a better opportunity of becoming acquainted with the manners, customs, and dispositions of the citizens of Augusta [.] I shall not do them injustice by dividing them into three classes (in which the Negroes are excepted). The first class of which are the gentry as they would expect to be called, made up of men from all parts who have become rich here, mostly by avaricious and unjust means [.] And this class we cannot expect to see drink more than once a week. The second is mostly the natives of this state and South Carolina, who are men of a little property, of a little education and very little of an honorable principle of any kind, and these are not often seen drunk in the forenoon. The third class appears to me to be made up of the off-scouring of every bad place on earth, for I never saw their equal for drunkenness, lying, stealing, fighting, swearing from morning till morning again. It is not possible that the continent of America has in any other place their equal. If it had, I think the whole world soon be sunk." He finds Augusta's African-American residents the only trustworthy ones, despite local opinions: "If any stealing is done here, it is laid to the Negroes, but I had my surtout, a shirt, and handkerchief stolen on Friday night last, but have too good an opinion of the blacks to [think] they have them." Of interest as an outsider's views on the early Antebellum South and on drinking another pressing social issue of the day. Single letter, three 9 x 16 inch pages, letters with some tape repairs and stray holes at folds, still quite legible.

This is a 1969 Carl Corley and Louisiana Department of Highways pictorial map of Antebellum mansions in Louisiana. A Closer Look Coverage embraces Louisiana with grand antebellum mansion…s highlighted throughout. The highest concentration of homes appears along the River Road, known as 'Millionaire's Row'. Aside from the antebellum mansions, American Civil War sites are identified with illustrations. A battle drum, saber, and Confederate flag appear along the right border, underscoring Confederate nostalgia. Vignettes of 'plantation life' complete this nostalgic aesthetic, with Southern Belles in hoop skirts and young Southern gentlemen in Confederate uniforms. Louisiana's Antebellum Plantation Houses Over 150 plantations are on the National Registry of Historic Places in Louisiana. These plantations bring in tens of millions of dollars from tourists annually, making them a critical part of Louisiana's tourism economy. The grand plantation houses represent a 'gilded nostalgia' for the Antebellum era. Stoked by the popularity of Gone with the Wind (still the highest-grossing movie of all time when adjusted for inflation), the former plantations profited on touristic nostalgia for hoop skirts and mint juleps. Today, many of the plantations are also incorporating the stories of the enslaved, and a handful focus exclusively on the realities of slavery instead of the 'gilded' history. Publication History and Census This map was published by the Sunday Advocate , a newspaper in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on June 29, 1969. The original map was published by the Art and Model Unit Public Relations and Educational Section of the Louisiana Department of Highways c. 1969. It is part of a series of 4 maps of Louisiana done in the same style for the Louisiana Department of Highways, two of which (including the present map) are signed by Department of Highways illustrator Carl V. Corley. (Corley's signature is below the saber and Confederate flag near the right border.) This is the only known surviving example of the Sunday Advocate edition of this map.
