In red cloth with gilt title on front cover and gilt illustration on spine (slight variation from 1st edition). Spine is a bit darkened but gilt is bright. All edges gilt. There is a penetration (ice pick?) near the top edge of the front cover reaching through the first 7 pages with a dimple present though the following 7 pages. The paste-down endpapers (front and back) have an 1.5" strip skinned off the leading edge (probably something taped or glues to paper and pulled off removing paper surface layer). Light wear to lower cover edges and corner. Still, a bright and attractive copy with 80 very nice illustrations along with descriptive text. Originally issued in 30 monthly parts bound in printed paper wrappers, each with four engravings and eight or twelve pages of text; also issued in quarterly instalments. Contemporary gilt morocco with intricate floral motifs within a double-lined gilt border, spine with six densely gilt compartments of raised gilt bands and gilt floral motifs, gilt title on two, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt. , W.H. Bartlett was one of the most prolific and popular European traveler-artists of the 19th century. The engravings show views of the Danube, starting from Ulm and going on to Passau, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, and finally ending at Sulina at the mouth of the Danube., Size : 4to., Complete with 80 plates, including the engraved title plate, engraved map, and 78 steel plates.
