Es, además, una historia que recoge las experiencias y palabras de los pueblos del África Oriental. Mona, bufona, bruja, espía, mal espíritu o caníbal. Estos fueron algunos nombres que la población local utilizó para referirse a Heike Behrend durante sus investigaciones de campo en África Oriental. Con el tiempo, comprendió el significado de estos calificativos: eran formas que tenían los pueblos estudiados para referirse a lo extraño, a lo ajeno a la comunidad. En concreto, «mona» fue el nombre con el que se refirieron a ella los habitantes del pueblo Bartabwa, en Kenia, con el que convivió un tiempo. Lejos de ser una palabra despectiva, con ella designaban a los niños, porque vienen de los simios y están en proceso de transformarse en hombres. Descubrir esto le permitió a la autora realizar un análisis desprejuiciado de los grupos humanos, explorando al mismo tiempo otra manera de conocerse a sí misma. Heike Behrend define su libro como un relato etnográfico, pero también como una «historia de enredos, más bien poco heroicos, y malentendidos culturales».
