The original peach pictorial endpapers, printed in black, bound in at front and rear. Spine very slightly mellowed, otherwise an exceptionally fine copy. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase. A most attractive and unusually well-preserved example of Now We Are Six, the third volume in A. A. Milne's beloved Winnie-the-Pooh series, published at the height of his literary partnership with Shepard. Issued two years after Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), the present volume continues the gentle poetic chronicles of Christopher Robin's imaginative world - poems that balance whimsy with a quiet, often wistful awareness of childhood's passing. Shepard's illustrations - already inseparable from Milne's text by this date - appear here in their original black and white form, capturing with remarkable economy the personalities of Pooh, Piglet, and their companions. The famous vignette of Christopher Robin "going on an adventure" appears on the cover in gilt, lending this binding a particularly appropriate decorative coherence. The binding, executed by Rivière & Son at the end of the 1920s, is characteristic of their finest work of the period: crisp gilding, harmonious proportions, and a sensitive integration of illustrative motifs into the design. The retention of the original pictorial endpapers is an especially desirable feature, preserving an important element of the book's first issue character within an elevated binding. An exceptionally fine example from one of the major English collections. Francis I, King of France (1515-47), first of five monarchs from the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois to rule France ascending to the thrown in 1515. The Renaissance ruler was famed for his patronage of the arts and intellectualism as well as his political maneuvering with other European powers. Interestingly, it is not Francis featured in this Cosway style portrait, but the Duke Annas de Montmorency (c.1493-1567), a favorite of the king, and active statesman for Francis I's court. George Bayntun (1873-1940) was the founder of Bayntun Bindery (1894) dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse, director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie (1849-1940). As the style grew in popularity, other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine.

Cosway Bindings: In the first decade of the twentieth century, the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran & Co., introduced a type of binding that was decorative, had historic associations, and catered to the level of quality expected by connoisseurs at the time. Between 1902 and 1903, John Harrison Stonehouse (1864-1937), managing director of Sotheran's, created what came to be referred to as "Cosway bindings." These were named after the celebrated eighteenth-century English portrait miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821). Cosway bindings are distinguished by their attractive, finely painted miniatures that are protected by glass and inset into the covers or doublures (inside covers) of elegantly tooled books. Stonehouse's success with the bindings was due in part to his employment of skilled miniaturist, Miss C. B. Currie. It has been estimated that Miss Currie painted several thousand miniatures, recognized for their delicate rendering and precision, for over nine hundred bindings before her death circa 1940.
