Reproduction date unknown. The original image was taken on May 28, 1963, at a Woolworth's five-and-dime store in Jackson, Mississippi. It depicts Tougaloo College sociology professor John Salter and students Joan Trumpauer and Anne Moody seated calmly while a hostile white mob pours sugar, ketchup, and mustard on them. In this event, civil rights activists conducted sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in the southern United States to protest racial segregation and discrimination. These sit-ins were a form of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience. African American activists and their allies would intentionally enter segregated establishments and attempt to order food or drinks at the 'whites only' lunch counters. When denied service, they would remain seated, often enduring verbal and sometimes physical abuse from counter staff and white supremacists. The purpose of these sit-ins was to draw attention to the injustice of segregation and to challenge the practice by peacefully defying it.
