Reproduction date unknown. The original image was taken on May 28, 1963, at a Woolworth's five-and-dime store in Jackson, Mississippi. It depicts Touga…loo College sociology professor John Salter and students Joan Trumpauer and Anne Moody seated calmly while a hostile white mob pours sugar, ketchup, and mustard on them. In this event, civil rights activists conducted sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in the southern United States to protest racial segregation and discrimination. These sit-ins were a form of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience. African American activists and their allies would intentionally enter segregated establishments and attempt to order food or drinks at the 'whites only' lunch counters. When denied service, they would remain seated, often enduring verbal and sometimes physical abuse from counter staff and white supremacists. The purpose of these sit-ins was to draw attention to the injustice of segregation and to challenge the practice by peacefully defying it. The sit-ins at lunch counters were one of the many tactics employed during the Civil Rights Movement to fight for equal rights, and they were instrumental in bringing about legal changes and social reforms that eventually led to desegregation in public accommodations. Specific events, like the Greensboro sit-ins in North Carolina in 1960, played a pivotal role in popularizing this form of protest. The media, including the Associated Press [AP], played a significant role in documenting and disseminating information about these events, which helped garner support for the civil rights cause.
