Sound and square binding in blue, cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and decoration. Corners and spine ends are worn and the spne is darkened. The endpapers have discolored and there is a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper. The frontispiece plate is creased along the right hand edge. The inside pages are generally clean and unmarked, with a couple having some fore-edge damage from the pages being cut open. An edition of the classic story of Lorna Doone and her life on Exmoor, England. This edition published for Boots the Chemist. Includes twelve colour tipped in plates by Charles E. Brittan and four by Charles E. Brock.

A very good copy with very good dustwrapper in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 16 tipped in colour plates by Brock and Brittan. Undated but 1930's and commissioned by Boots the Chemists. The wrapper has a pasted portrait to the front and is complete but with a small tear and a little nibbling to the top spine edge. The spine is darker. It is in a protective wrap. The blue cloth binding is very bright and clean with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. There is some pulling to the spine. Internally there is some offsetting from the advertisements on the wrapper ends to the endpapers. The frontispiece and title page have light spotting and the frontispiece has a couple of creases. Contents otherwise very clean. There is a recurrent paper flaw affecting some pages, which creates a light crease line from the gutter diagonally out into the text page for a couple of inches. Page 290 was opened poorly - with some tearing at the base in the gutter - this has been repaired with small loss from the bottom edge and there is small loss from the bottom edge on p 291. Text is not affected.

This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is some spotting to the prelims and a neat inscription to the front paste down. A dustwrapper is not presemt, instead there is a wraparound clear acetate wrapper. Roughcut pages toned to edges and occasional minor spotting, but in general all in good internal order. No inscriptions. Decorated boards lightly bumped and a little sunned to extremities with general fading to spine. Good unclipped d/j also with mounted colour portrait, dulled to edges and spine with some wear and vertical crease to front panel. Now in removable protective sleeve. 4to. x, 520pp.

Original Artwork. Zustand: Fine. ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR signed Charles E. Brittan. The son of an artist Charles E. Brittan was born in Plymouth, and lived for many years in Tavistock, examples of his work are in the Plymouth Art Gallery collections. A contemporary of F. J. Widgery, and like him was commissioned to illustrated several books, including a sumptuous edition of the Exmoor classic romantic thriller Lorna Doone (1911). Brian Le Messurier, Dartmoor Artists, page 52, " He painted in both oils and watercolours, but is best known as a watercolourist. Latterly he favoured the lichen-covered rock or boulder in the foreground ".
