Zustand: Sehr gut. Gr.8°. XI, 267 Seiten mit zahlreichen Tabellen. Originalleinen mit Umschlag. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Often described as an emergency, home-lessness in America is becoming a chronic condition that reflects an overall decline in the nation's standard of living and the general state of the economy. This is the disturbing conclusion drawn by Martha Burt in Over the Edge, a timely book that takes a clear-eyed look at the astonishing surge in the homeless population during the 1980s. Assembling and analyzing data from 147 U.S. cities, Burt documents the increase in homelessness and proposes a comprehensive explanation of its causes, incorporating economic, personal, and policy determinants. Her unique research answers many provocative questions: Why did homelessness continue to spiral even after economic conditions improved in 1983? Why is it significantly greater in cities with both high poverty rates and high per capita income? What can be done to implement short- and long-term solutions to the problem? Burt points to the significant catalysts of homelessness - the decline of manufacturing jobs in the inner city, the increased cost of living, the tight rental housing market, diminished household income, and reductions in public benefit programs - all of which exert pressures on the more vulnerable of the extremely poor. She looks at the special problems facing the homeless, including the growing number of mentally ill and chemically dependent individuals, and explains why certain groups - minorities and low-skilled men, single men and women, and families headed by women - are at greatest risk of becoming homeless. Not to beforgotten that Ronald Reagan was President from 1981 to 1989 and it was the time of "Reagonomics." Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

"Martha Ezzard never shied away from difficult subjects as a newspaper columnist, but who'd have expected to find her making award-winning wines from grapes grown on a North Georgia family farm - digging in the dirt in Tiger, Georgia. Her fascinating story is not just about a change in lifestyle but a leap of faith." - Dick Denny, past chairman, High Museum of Art, founder and chief taster, High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction. "Martha M. Ezzard and her physician husband John are among the pioneers in the movement of professionals trading busy city careers for a return to the land. While this story about saving a fifth-generation family farm is distinctly Southern, it typifies the national locally grown movement which has begun to sweep the country. Locally grown foods call for wines that are a taste of the local earth - what wine aficionados call the terroir - the soils and climate that give the grapes unique flavors not found in California or Burgundy or anywhere other than, in this case Tiger Mountain, Georgia. What follows initially are long sweaty days of post hole digging, trellis wire stringing, and weed pulling mixed with a few chiggers and ticks - but also the thrill of sighting a giant blue heron in the dawn mist of the farm pond - of hearing the honking of geese at sunset. There are times when the city high rise still beckons, but what Martha and John learn after burning smudge pots all night in a late April freeze only to see their pink buds turn brown despite it all, is that wine grapes have a second bud - and so too, because of their shared venture - does their relationship. The story of Tiger Mountain Vineyards is a window into the nascent community of regional and local wineries; Martha and John are helping to craft a high-quality wine industry in America's rural South." - Doug Frost, master sommelier, master of wine, author, and internationally known wine consultant. "The Second Bud is vintage Martha Ezzard: detailed and passionate prose with a splash of humor. She recounts her family's pioneering venture into the world of fine wine from the terroir of a Southern family farm." - Lea Donosky, former Sunday editor, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Book. Complete set of Stephen Willats' seminal periodical 'Control'. First 5 issues: 310 x 225 mm with screenprinted wrappers. Later issues have printed pictorial wrappers and are slightly smaller in format. Since 1965, this pioneering conceptual art magazine has published original artwork and writing from over 150 artists, alongside collectives and collaboratives such as Artists Placement Group. Issue 13 features an original work by Anish Kapoor of an insect-object sprayed blue; together with a photocopy collage intervention by Glenys Johnson entitled Agent Orange. Issue 3 comes complete with inserts: Poem-Blanc by John Sharkey and Peter Upward's untitled painting. This seminal publication is significant for its community-based approach, and its theories based on cybernetics and social science. Its content rejected a traditional mode of criticism and instead concentrated on theoretical ideas, technical models and artistic methods: Control is purely a magazine of art theory, in the sense that it presented text by artists looking at the thinking behind their work (Willats, Publishing Interventions, 2 in In Numbers: Serial Publications by artists since 1955, PPP Editions, Zurich, 1999, p. 129). While within the remit of the art magazine, Control is notable for its interdisciplinary reach. As the artist has commented, the magazine's origins were a reaction to a very strong inheritance from previous decades that constrained the artists into very set roles of painting, sculpture and traditional mediums (ibid).
