The early parts of the book describe life on the goldfields: the hardships of being "hard up," mining at Bayley's Reward, dry-blowing, quartz reefing, the scarcity of water, and several prospecting expeditions into unknown country (including to Kurnalpi, Queen Victoria Spring, Mount Margaret, and a successful gold find at Lake Darlot that financed his later travels). The core of the work is the major 1896-1897 expedition he led with camels from Lake Darlot northward through the Great Sandy Desert and Tanami region to Halls Creek in the Kimberley, and the return journey—covering more than 3,000 miles over 13 months. …

In 1895 - 1897, the Hon. David Wynford Carnegie, born in 1981, youngest son of the Earl of Southesk, led one of the last great expeditions in the exploration of Australia. His route from Lake Darlot to Halls Creek and return, took thirteen months and covered over three thousand mile. Carnegie financed his expedition from the result of a successful gold strike at Lake Darlot. Arriving in Australia in 1972, with his friend, Lord Percy Douglas, he learnt the ways of the bush as a miner, prospector and engine driver, taking several small expeditions into the unknown area in search of gold.
