The protagonist is known as "the king" within his family, due to his extraordinary wealth and power; living with him in a lavish mansion are his nine wives, as well as sisters, poor… relatives, servants and muitsai (essentially indentured slaves). Each of the eight stand-alone chapters, following the first, relates the story of one of the women in this mix - the first chapter introducing 'the king' himself. The author uses this narrative framework to portray the lives of women across the socio-economic spectrum in Hong Kong during this period. While fictional, the author, who had married into a similar milieu, used her own real-life family experience as a basis of the work. Slight traces of tape residue on front and rear EPs.
