In den WarenkorbProctor was a much loved individual in literary circles, from the days of the London Magazine to the mid-Victorian period, in which he was the dedicatee of both Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair' and Wilkie Collins's 'Woman in White'. His reputation as a poet was international: he was thought highly of by Pushkin. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to blank reverse. The letter reads: 'Dear [Harris?] | Pray tell me where [?] I can have some conversation with you about some patients of the name of [Lealer? Lester?], whom you know. If an interview be difficult, then you will perhaps tell me what you know about them (their Conduct I mean) particularly about Miss Anne [Lealer? Lester?]' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Zustand: Very good condition. Obligation dated May 14, 1828, Flushing, New York. Regarding $1,900 owed to James Strong "of the City of New York, Merchant", at the rate of seven per cent per annum, and signed by Charles P. and Warren Cornwall. Witnessed by S. B. Nicoll. The back of the sheet details the payments to James Strong and Thomas H. Betts. These payments begin in 1830 to Strong; they continue after the bond was assigned to Thomas H. Betts. The last one appears to be have been made on June 19th 1839 "of Benjamin W. Strong, executor of Charles P. Cornwall, $2,038. 94, signed Thos H Betts". This last record of payment affixed to bottom of the original document with wax. A few splits at original folds, 8 x 18". Charles P. Cornwall was a large landowner in Queens in the early 1800s, with Bayside Farm being the most valuable of his properties. In 1838 Cornwall named Thomas Whitson and John Nostrand, his neighbors as trustees, empowered to sell as much of his real estate as was needed to cover his debts and to lease the rest of it to cover his living expenses. They sold Cornwall's Bayside Farm for $15,000 to Samuel Willetts of New York, in 1838. The trustees, using some of the assets from the sale, then made a loan to Elisha Hall of Newburgh for $6,000. Cornwall died in 1839, Hall failed to repay the interest or principal, and the trustees were sued. The case gives an interesting perspective on the value of property in Queens at the time: "His [Cornwall's] preference for farms, over city property, differs from the opinion of most well informed and shrewd capitalists; but it may, nevertheless, be well doubted, whether a farm, situated in a populous neighborhood and near several great thoroughfares, is not safer for a permanent investment than any city property". (Cases in Law and Equity, Supreme Court of the State of New York. Barbour, Oliver L. Vol. XX. New York: Banks and Brothers: 1883. p 142-7.).

Procter writes to Mr Harrison, not further identified but presumably a post-master in Ryde, to enquire after the current status of an errant letter. Although 'of no consequence', and not requiring an answer, Procter is keen that it does not 'come before the authorities of 'The Dead Letter Office' for their criticism'. He asks, therefore, that Harrison 'intimate to Mr. Tennant, where this treasure [value twopence, as the pleaders say] is at this present moment lying hid'. As an afterthought, he instructs Harrison to pass on the present note to Tennant, 'having of course the proper address'. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.

In den WarenkorbAn interesting letter, dealings with the practicalities of the artist's profession in late Victorian/Edwardian England. Hemy was regarded as the leading English marine artist of his generation, with his paintings often selling for in excess of a thousand pounds. With the proceeds he built a grand house which he named Churchfield in Falmouth. 2pp, 16mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. The recipient - presumably his agent - is not named and there is no salutation. Signed 'C. Napier Hemy.' Begins: 'Thanks for cheque enclosed. for which I send over page formal receipt. [not present] I am sorry that you did not sell the misty weather[.] I thought one or other of the men who wanted it would have bought it. The first man spent £106 . 15 . 0 at Bartons, I think he would have done better out of the gallery.' He asks for the pictures to be 'sent up all right to the house', and offers the services of his 'man Gillet'. Postscript: 'I have been very ill for 3 weeks & unable to work but hope to get better & be back in a fortnight. Mrs Hemy is with me tell Mr Ingram.'.

A warm letter in which Procter asks his friend to 'stand for my little boy as godfather'. Aware that this may be considered an imposition, Procter adds, 'If there be anything unpleasant in this, or you have any scruples that stand in the way of you doing, what I am sure you will wish otherwise to do, I hope you will mention them without the least hesitation'. Should Atkinson decline the request, Procter assures him he will 'shake [him] by the hand quite as cordially as before'. Whether Atkinson accepted the honour, we have been unable to ascertain. In den Warenkorb13 lines in black ink on first side only of 4pp 8vo, integral address leaf; lightly folded for posting, sl. torn at seal. Procter sends Talfourd his memoir of Edmund Kean, hoping for a favourable review, and believing him always to be 'very sincere'. His Life of Edmund Kean, published in 1835, was the first comprehensive biography of the great Shakespearean actor. Talfourd's thoughts on the work are not documented, but if they echoed those of the London Quarterly Review in July 1835 - 'a very worthless book' - Procter would have been truly disappointed. Signed 'BW Procter'. The note has been continued later in the day, with Procter asking Talfourd if they could 'club for a vehicle', as they are both invited to Macready's next Sunday. This additional note is signed with initials. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.

In declining an invitation to dine with Thomas Talfourd, Procter explains 'I am confined to my room - & in fact unable either to sit down or get out of my chair without help'.
