The R S Surtees Society is dedicated to reprinting the novels of Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864). They describe Surtees as "England's greatest novelist of the hunting field".

General, overall scratches across the boards. Up to pg. 33, there are pieces of the pages (not effecting the text) missing at the top front corner. Light foxing to the endpages. Marbled edges faded and dust-stained.

Original embossed decorative leather, stamped gilt lettering, marbeled endpapers, 6 ½ x 10 ¼ inches, double column text, 61 pp + 133 pp + 96 pp + 112 pp + 356, illustrated with 16 plates (all present). Hardcover, good. Scuffed, most notably on high points of embossing, corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, rubbed along edges, 3 inch tear on rear joint, and approximately 1 inch piece of leather chipped off rear board. Internally, contemporary previous owner's inscription, relatively moderate foxing and tanning throughout, a half dozen or so dogears, otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Nice Victorian miscellany, covering science, morality, religion, history, art, literature, and even the Laurel Hill Cemetery of Philadelphia and root beer!
