The book is protected in a removable Mylar cover. A detailed and comprehensive history of the character of Scaramouch, a character developed by the commedia dell'arte in Paris, and first popularised in the 17th century by Tiberio Fiorillo. Legend has it that when the two-year-old Dauphin (future Louis XIV) was distressed one night as a child Fiorilli, as Scaramouche, comforted and entertained him through grimaces and general tomfoolery. Consequently, Fiorilli was ordered to visit court to amuse the future King, and the character of Scaramouche henceforth became a standard role in theatre at the time. Constantini (d. 1729) was one of the pillars of the Commmedia dell'Arte from 1682 until 1697, when Louis XIV closed it down. He was the author of Vie de Scaramouche, 1692, and had a devoted following for his singing and expressive acting. A very handsome production and scarce as the special edition. In den WarenkorbLtd ed 34/80 copies printed on parchment vellum and bound in half vellum with decorative paper covered boards designed by Randolph Schwabe. Translated from the first edition published in Paris, 1695. It is signed by C. W. Beaumont and Edmund Blunden. There are 4 full page illustrations. A complex history of the role of Scaramouche and its performers that was developed by the Commedia dell'Arte and particularly be one of the greatest actors of the 17th century, Tiberio Fiorilli, who was a friend of Moliere. Apart from some exterior dustiness, fine. Loosely inserted are two beautifully designed and printed bookplates of Lionel Bradley, a considerable collector of fine books. Also loosely inserted is a 1pp letter from Rex Hilson to Maude Lloyd, gifting the book to her, which he had selected for her from Bradley's library that he describes as "immense". Bradley was immersed not only in books (he became the Assistant Secretary and sub-Librarian at the much loved London Library) but even more so in the world of dance, its fellow enthusiasts, dancers and choreographers amongst whom he made his circle of friends, hence his friendship with Maude and Nigel Gosling. He wrote a short history Sixteen Years of Ballet Rambert 1930-1946. He also contributed to many journals such as Ballet. He helped found with Cyril Beaumont and the judge and Buddhist, Christmas Humphreys, the London Archives of the Dance, which built a collection of books and archives for the profession. It was placed under the umbrella of the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1968. Rex Hilson, who was beneficiary of the chattels in Bradley's estate and who sends the letter here to Maude, was responsible for ensuring Bradley's own substantial and "accurate" archive of English ballet was passed to the London Archives of the Dance on his death. Acquired from Maud Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. Later she wrote, with her husband, Nigel Gosling, influential dance books and reviews under the pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, they became his surrogate parents.
