Paperback. Zustand: New. In the summer of 1881, Lt. Adolphus Greely of the Fifth United States Cavalry and a crew of twenty-one men set out on the Proteus to explore the then relatively-unknown Arctic Circle. During their three-year journey, the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, as it came to be known, was meant to ascertain new astronomical data, to establish an observation station, and to record other meteorological data. And while they did accomplish those tasks, the crew of the Proteus will instead forever be remembered for the catastrophe that they encountered, one that yielded few survivors. After a relatively calm first year in the Arctic, the members of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition grew increasingly desperate as ships carrying essential supplies-food, clothing, and building materials, among other items-failed to reach them due to increasingly perilous conditions. Slowly but surely the harsh weather and low supplies decimated the crew, as one by one they succumbed to the merciless Arctic. When a rescue vessel finally reached the Proteus in 1884, only six members of the original expedition remained. Told in concise prose with stunning clarity, Proteus crew member David L. Brainard's Outpost of the Lost is an inspiring account of human spirit and perseverance, and is not be missed by any armchair adventurer or history buff.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good +. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. Octavo size, 305 pp., with dust jacket. David Legge Brainard (1856-1946), a career military man, was appointed as the first sergeant for the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. Their destination was the most northern latitude americans had ever explored, with the expedition's goal to establish a meteorological observation post. Out of the twenty-five men who embarked, only six survived; this book is Brainard's diary which relates the harrowing story. Note that while this book does not match the description in Zempel for a first printing, apparently no copies have a first printing statement so we are unable to determine such for this copy. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in blue cloth over boards, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, map endpapers, black-and-white photographic frontispiece of "The Six Who Came Back" with an additional eleven bound in throughout; octavo size (8 3/4" by 6"), pagination: [1-10] 11- 305. The dust jacket with a pictorial illustration wrapping from the spine to the front panel, surrounded by images of contemporary newspaper clippings with stark headlines ("An Arctic Disaster", etc.), original price of $3.00 on the bottom of the front flap, and a summary of the book on both flaps. ___CONDITION: Volume a bit better than very good, the binding clean other than a few light, stray spots, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean though the paper has begun to tone, the only prior owner marking we see a name penned on front free endpaper map; light wear to the tail of the spine and the bottom edge of the back board. The dust jacket very good, not price-clipped, with some overall wear most noticeable at the head and tail of the spine, some short closed tears to the jacket folds, sunning to the spine, and signs of old dampstaining on the verso. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help.
