"Was Serena's obsession with the snake brooch just superstition of did the brooch really possess an evil power which was gradually closing in around her? For Kurt, buying the brooch was an expression of love for his partner, and a boost to his own flagging confidence in her love. For Serena, the brooch was both fascinating and frightening. Serena was convinced this was the brooch her mother had told her about. Originally made for her grandmother, it had been owned by several women in Malacca and Jakarta. Each woman had suffered severe injury and lost her husband or lover in ways seemingly related to the brooch. Now the brooch had found its way to her. This is the story of Serena's increasing obsession with the brooch, and her desire to keep it, despite many warnings to get rid of it before it could destroy her. An intriguing look at the power inanimate objects can have over many in the Chinese-descent communities of Malaysia and Indonesia." Fiction. "Sooner or later, Westerners have to confront the challenges to their rationality posed by belief in the supernatural in general and magic in particular. Dewi Anggraeni does not compromise in taking the view that magic and the supernatural are real and continue to operate in modern society." --Michael Day, The West Australian. Paperback. Dewi Anggraeni, Indra Publishing. Dewi Anggraeni wrote this book because she saw that many things which did not fit the ethnic Chinese stereotype in Indonesia were rarely brought to the public's attention, as they were not easily 'slotted' into the existing neat categories. "I wanted to break some of the issues I deemed important out of the editing 'black hole' and present them as the core contents of a book, because they were very significant not only for others to understand, but for the ethnic Chinese to understand what was happening to, and around, themselves". Paperback.…
