Containing numerous original photographic prints of varying sizes, including approx. 18 large-format photographs measuring up to 23 x 29 cm, of which 12 are signed in the negative by the photographer and postcard publisher M. Venieris of Khartoum. Photographs mounted between one and four per page, with numerous contemporary manuscript captions in English, written in ink on the mounts. Some prints bear captions, numbers, and photographers' signatures within the negatives; others appear to have been taken with private cameras. The collection also includes a loosely inserted invitation addressed to Colonel Drage to attend a dinner in honour of H.R.H. Princess Henry of Battenberg at Governor-General Wingate's Palace, Khartoum; a letter on Balmoral headed paper from Sir Charles Frederick, written while travelling to Buckingham Palace with Their Majesties and referring to a proposed meeting with Drage; and a menu for Her Majesty's Dinner, held at Windsor Castle on Monday, 21 November 1895. Covers detached and spines lacking. Photographs generally well preserved, with varying degrees of toning, fading, silvering, and occasional surface marks; several prints noticeably faded. The spines of the bindings are detached; album leaves with age-related discolouration and occasional handling wear. The accompanying ephemera further include an official letter dated 18 May 1904 concerning Drage's administrative service, a manuscript note referring to General Gordon's Garden at Khartoum, and a decorated royal commemorative card bearing manuscript references to Lord Kitchener of Khartoum and the Sudan campaigns. Overall, a good collection. An unusually rich photographic account of Sudan at a decisive historical turning point, assembled by Colonel William Henry Drage (1852-1915), who participated in the reconquest and subsequently served in the administration of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Particularly remarkable for its photographs of the dead Mahdist leaders following the final defeat of Khalifa Abdallahi in 1899, alongside intimate views of military and administrative life, indigenous communities, and the reconstruction of Khartoum. From the collection of Colonel Drage and his family, with a contemporary provenance inscription reading "Rosie Drage, 17/2/02" in one of the albums. The albums encompass both the violent conclusion of the Mahdist state and the establishment of the new colonial order. Their subjects range from the aftermath of military campaigns, and the surviving material remains of Mahdist rule to official ceremonies, public works, transportation, markets, domestic life, and the everyday activities of Sudanese communities. Of particular historical importance is a remarkable sequence of seven photographs documenting the final phase of the Mahdist War and its leading figures. These include Osman Sheikh ed Din, identified in the contemporary caption as "Sheikh ed Din. Wounded"; an "Emir of Tayadia"; and Yunus al Dikyam, a prominent Mahdist commander. Three especially striking photographs, captioned "Khalifa Abdullah", "Khalifa and Fedil", and "Ahmed Fedil", depict the bodies of Khalifa Abdallahi, the successor to the Mahdi and ruler of the Mahdist state, and Ahmad Fadil, one of his principal military commanders, following the final defeat of the Mahdist forces at Umm Diwaykarat in November 1899. Another photograph records the Khalifa's jibba, displayed with apparent bloodstains. Together, these images provide an unusually direct and disturbing visual record of the collapse of Mahdist rule following the Battle of Omdurman in September 1898, the final destruction of its leadership in November 1899, and the consolidation of Anglo-Egyptian colonial rule in Sudan.
