Cloth is a little worn, rubbed through on corners and spine ends, two small dark marks on verse. Scattered rust spots on endpapers; inked squiggle (perhaps a previous owner's signature?) on front paste down else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  .

In quite good blue bevel edged cloth boards, black titles and sea creature and floral motif to front. The covers are fairly clean; a little wobbly from cracked hinge; edge-worn, corners bumped and frayed. The rear free end paper is marked, the front end papers are lightly marked, with names of previous owners; the centre is split and shows the webbing.Dark tinted top cut edge; the fore and tail edges are slightly tanned. The text block is in very good condition for age; with tightly bound pages, straight and only very lightly tanned on most page edges. With 435 beautiful b/w illustrations. Publisher's list to rear. Condition overall is good. Without jacket.

Figuier's Popular History of Mammals all the footnotes of the previous edition have been incorporated, and where necessary, the text has been altered so as to make it harmonise with these notes, some few of which, there is reason to believe, were written by the late well-known zoologist, E. Blyth. I have also not hesitated to omit some sentences that conveyed ideas now known to be inaccurate.".

The binding is fragile, the front hinge is split exposing the binding block and the ffep and title page is lose. The tanned pages are clean with a dedication penned on the inside front board dated 1891 and another dated 1931. This book has 605 pages plus list of other volumes. All in all a nice example of this book.

SOBRE EL AUTOR:: Edward Percival Wright (1834, Donnybrook, Dublín - 1910) fue un cirujano oftalmólogo, profesor, botánico, zoólogo irlandés.Era el hijo mayor del abogado Edward Wright y de Charlott Wright. Edward fue educado por tutores privados, y aprendió Historia natural de George James Allman. Desde 1852 estudió en el Trinity College, Dublin, graduándose de B.A. en 1857. En ese año fue curador del Museo Universitario del Trinity y, al año siguiente, 1858, profesor en Zoología, puesto que mantuvo por diez años. Al mismo tiempo, llevó a cabo estudios de medicina y daba conferencias en Botánica en la Facultad de Medicina del "Hospital Dr. Steevens, de Dublín; y obtuvo un M.A. (Universidad de Dublín) en 1859 y otro MA Ad eundem degree, por la Universidad de Oxford). La pareja no tuvo hijos.Fue un viajero agraciado gastando muchas vacaciones recorriendo la mayoría del continente europeo, recogiendo especímenes de historia natural; y en 1867 pasó seis meses en las Seychelles haciendo grandes colecciones de la fauna y la flora. Y le siguieron más trabajos científicos. En 1857, se unió a Alexander Henry Haliday en una excursión espeleológica a las Cuevas Mitchelstown en el Condado Galway para estudiar los insectos de cuevas. Una, Lipura wrightii fue nombrada por él. Con el Dr. Theophil Rudolf Studer reportaron corales (Alcyonaria) de la Expedición Challenger produciendo un artículo en 1889. También en la década de 1850 un conjunto excepcional de anfibios fósiles del Pensilvaniense (Carbonífero) (estos son muy raros y sólo dos casos se conocen en el mundo) fueron descubiertos en yacimientos de carbón de Jarrow Colliery, Castlecomer. Y fueron descriptos por Wright con Thomas Henry Huxley.
