With the Class Supper Semi Centennial 1826 - 1876 card made out to Dr. Henry Dyer, with a lengthy list of illustrious signatures on the verso, loosely inserted. Many of the names are Harvard Divinity School graduates, and one is of the cofounder of the noted Transcendental Club which was formed with Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Putnam. This group of New England 19th century intellectuals gave rise to Transcendentalism in the US. The signatures include some of the remarkable graduates of the Class of 1826: J. S. Wheeler, Henry Dyer, Edward Warren, Allen W. Dodge, A. P. Peabody (Plummer professor of Christian Morals, Harvard 1860 - 1881 who entered Harvard when he was 12), Samuel [Wathen], Alexander J. Hamilton, Julian Abbott, Geo. Putnam, Willard Parker, S. F. [Hawes], G. W. Hosmer (noted Unitarian preacher, president of Antioch College); Wm [Ruper], Oliver Stearns (Parkman Professor of Theology at Harvard), Wm. A. Gordon, and Cazeneau Palfrey. Two folio volumes, profusely illustrated with wood engravings, lithographs, and many heliotypes of Harvard professors and buildings. Vol I: 346pp; Vol II 447pp. Publisher's maroon cloth, blind tooled, gilt Harvard emblem to covers, top edges gilt. Spines ends quite worn, some loss; corners bumped. Gilt stamped lettering and blind stamped decoration. All edges are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Covers are scuffed, rubbed and worn, though lettering remains good. Joints and hinges with small cracks though both volumes remain tight with no looseness of covers. Several leaves near center of Volume II show creases and tears along upper fore edge, though none affecting text or images. General light wear. Vaille and Henry Alden Clark first compiled The Harvard Book in 1875 as a souvenir for fellow members of the Harvard College classes of 1874 and 1875. A comprehensive history of campus life to 1875, the book describes Harvard's academic mission customs, building, organizations, and prominent faculty and alumni. 30 fine full page heliotypes, two lithographs and a copper engraving by Paul Revere, struck from the original plate. "The Harvard Book" stands pre-eminently apart from the other histories of the University. It comprises two large quarto volumes, making upwards of eight hundred pages, printed on fine paper, with press-work as good as the University Press of Cambridge could do. The type used was new, and every line shows the handiwork of a competent and careful pressman. In many respects the illustrations make it the best-illustrated book published in this country prior to 1875. The views of the then-existing buildings and the portraits are heliotype photographs, giving certainly the most accurate pictures possible; and the prints, it is said, will permanently retain their original appearance. The subjects of the illustrations include almost every thing to be looked for in any illustrated book on Harvard University. In one particular, this history meets a want not supplied by the others. It gives historical and descriptive sketches, illustrated with views, of all the societies; and biographies, illustrated with portraits, of the chief officers of all departments. The whole work elicited so much admiration elsewhere, that a similar undertaking, "The Yale Book," has since been carried out at Yale College. Of "The Harvard Book" there were about five hundred copies of the first edition printed and perhaps one hundred copies of the second edition. These six hundred copies will enhance in value as time rolls on; for there will probably never be printed another edition, as the illustrations and negatives were wholly consumed by the fire in December last, which destroyed the office and warehouse of the present proprietors and publishers, Houghton Mifflin, & Co., of Boston" The Harvard Register. Covers show some age appropriate wear and tear (they are nearly 150 years old), but interior pages are pristine, if a bit yellow at edges. The Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library use these funds to promote literacy in the Bridgeport public schools and the community.

Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. A tight, very well-preserved copy of the 1878 2nd printing of this exhaustive history of Harvard, complete in 2 volumes. Both volumes solid and Near Fine in their light-purple, bevelled cloth. Bright, unflecked gilt-insignia (Harvard's crest) and lettering along the front panels and spines. Small former owner inscription at the first blank endpaper of Vol. I, rear inner hinge of same volume tender (but still perfectly sturdy). Dozens of crisp black-and-white plates (with their accompanying tissue-guards) of the campus and a number of the key figures of 19th century Harvard. Thick folios, all edges gilt. Imposing and very impressive.
