Da decenni ormai, psicologi, sociologi ed antropologi culturali hanno rivolto la loro attenzione al problema dei valori ma, nel corso di questi ultimi anni, le ricerche e gli studi si sono particolarmente intensificati. L'attualità del problema dei valori ne fa un oggetto preferenziale di studio nella moderna Psicologia Sociale. Dunque possiamo affermare che, dopo lo studio sistematico degli istinti e dei bisogni è seguito quello degli interessi, degli atteggiamenti e delle motivazioni, ed ora quello dei valori. Il concetto di valore, inteso come cognizione di ciò che è socialmente desiderabile, emerge come entità che contiene, al suo interno, fattori emotivi e cognitivi, e non va inteso come estensione a livello sociale della cognizione di ciò che è desiderabile da parte di un individuo, o di un gruppo ristretto di individui. Esso è il prodotto interamente sociale, legato ad una certa pratica sociale che favorisce i fattori integrativi superiori dell'individuo. L'orientamento dei valori rappresenta necessariamente un lineamento strutturale di comportamento legato al fenomeno di emergenza di livelli superiori, quali un sovrasistema nazionale (orientamento culturale dei valori) o un sovrasistema internazionale (orientamento interculturale dei valori). Esso è in grado, d'altra parte, come variabile indipendente del comportamento, di influenzare l'assetto di strutturazione dell'Immagine o del comportamento del singolo individuo. Gli Autori in questo volume, dopo una esposizione critica della letteratura sui valori, prendono in considerazione i testi costituzionali di un notevole numero di paesi quali espressioni dei massimi sistemi di valori di quelle società, ritenendo che le costituzioni esprimano, in ogni modo, una concezione di ciò che è stato valutato come desiderabile, dalla e per la maggior parte degli individui. In linea con la teoria generale dei sistemi viventi, gli Autori assumono quale criterio generale di osservazione, la stima dell'urgenza relativa assunta da ciascun valore nel ridurre lo stato di conflitto, dal momento che la situazione di conflittualità costituisce una costante spinta entropica nell'ambito dell'interazione. Il libro è destinato prevalentemente agli psicologi sociali, ma si rivolge inoltre agli educatori, ai sociologi, ai politici, ai filosofi e, in genere, a quanti sono direttamente interessati ad un approccio interdisciplinare dei problemi dell'interazione.
