Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Re/Form is an ambitious new monograph by artist Brendan Fernandes. Re/Form chronicles Fernandes recent exhibitions, "Contract and Release" at The Isamu Noguchi Museum, Long Island City, NY and, "The Master and Form" at The Graham Foundation, Chicago, IL and the 2019 Whitney Biennial, New York, NY. Both projects explored notions of discipline, mastery, and architecture to disrupt and recombine ballet and modern dance traditions. Together, they represented a decisive moment in Fernande's practice that is archived and celebrated in this publication. Fernandes's projects address issues of race, queer culture, migration, protest and other forms of collective movement in order to create spaces of solidarity. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. An in-depth survey of the sculptural and performance-based installation by the internationally recognized artistThis publication is an intimate exploration of Brendan Fernandes's installation and performance Inaction and the film Free Fall for Camera, which were co-presented by the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, United States and the Richmond Art Gallery in British Columbia, Canada. It creates a richly illustrated archive of the project by bringing together photographic documentation, architectural drawings, an original dance score, essays, and a conversation between the artist, featured dancers and the exhibition curators. The choreographies in Inaction are based on children's games like hide-and-seek, follow-the-leader, and other forms of call-and-response. This publication will engage these concepts using the movement of the pages as an extension of its graphic design. More so, Inaction explores the political capacity of notions like movement and stillness, wherein dance is considered a tool for collective understanding. Brendan Fernandes (b. 1979, Nairobi, Kenya) is an internationally recognized Canadian artist working at the intersection of dance and visual arts. His projects have shown at the 2019 Whitney Biennial (New York); the Solomon R. Notable projects include performances and solo presentations at the Noguchi Museum, New York, NY; The Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond, BC; The National Gallery of Canada and recent commissions with The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia; The DR Vocal Ensemble, Copenhagen, Denmark and a new dance performance with Munch Museum, Oslo, Norway. This exhibition catalogue examines the legacy of Scott Burton (1939-1989), an American original whose wide-ranging practice anticipated many of the strategies of today's art. It is the most comprehensive exhibition of Burton's work ever mounted in the United States. Featuring works from the 1960s to 80s, the exhibition underscores the breadth of the artist's vision. By the time of his death at the age of 50 from an AIDS-related illness, Burton had functioned as sculptor, public artist, performance artist, choreographer, art critic, and exhibition curator. The survey spans Burton's career, featuring nearly 40 sculptures, more than 70 photographs and ephemera, and the only known extant video of the artist's performance work. This catalogue is expected to serve as an essential source for scholars, artists, and others interested in the intentions and legacy of Scott Burton. The volume features full-page images of artwork, installation photography, and essays by David J. Getsy and Jess Wilcox; writings by the artists Brendan Fernandes, Gordon Hall, and curatorial collective Darling Green; contributions by Jeremy Johnston and Heather Alexis Smith; and a never-before-published excerpt from the transcript of a 1988 lecture by Burton.
